You can get Merlinus in two ways.  The better way would be to take the side quest because then he can get more levels.  Merlinus is the only character where, if you lose him, you can still deploy him in the next level.  It's better to accept the side quest because he can get more levels that way.

Rating:  9/10.  He doesn't take up a character slot, and he's exceptionally important for carrying items.
