Prior to the occupation of New Zealand by the European, Rawhiti and the surrounding Islands within the Bay of Islands, Rawhiti was under the control of Ngare Raumati.

At the turn of the 19th Century, an attack on Te Auparo and others from Ngai Tawake by Ngare Raumati resulted in a deep seated resentment by Ngai Tawake to Ngare Raumate.  Although Ngai Tawake was able to make small victories against the Rawhiti people, it was not until 1825 that satisfaction (muru) was taken.
