Foundation
of the Palaces and the Town
Originally,
Duke Eberhard Ludwig only had plans for a summer residence at Erlachhof for
hunting purposes. Following the example of other lords and the fixed opinion
that the creation of a town reflected the power
of
the feudal lord, he then decided to build a town next to the palace which had
been started in 1704 and invited people to reside here in 1709. He sponsored
the building plots and building materials and also guaranteed 15 years tax-free
existence. But it was only when the Duke himself promised to actually live in
Ludwigsburg that people began to build.
The
Vordere (Front ) and the Hintere (Back) streets, the Charlotten and Marstall
streets, the street now known as Bauhof street and other important traffic routes
were completed first. To speed up the construction of his town the Duke invited
his official authorities to build for him official buildings, which he then
gave to people who were in his favour. The town of Ludwigsburg, whilst retaining
its baroque charm, has grown very large.
Baroque
Ludwigsburg is still a
very young town but one with a great past, packed with history. The origins
of the baroque town start with the Residence for which the Duke Eberhard Ludwig
of W¨¹rttemberg laid the foundation stone in 1704. The palaces, other historical
buildings, the typical gardens, avenues, streets and squares still dominate
the town layout and reflect the baroque character.
