Cyanobacteria or Blue-Green Algae, one-celled living things that make up the phylum
Cyanophyta, in the kingdom Prokaryotae. They and bacteria
make up the prokaryotes. Cyanobacteria, like plants,
contain chlorophyll and conduct photosynthesis.
Some species live individually, but most gather in colonies or threadlike forms.
Reproduction is by simple cell division or by fragmentation of the threads. Cyanobacteria
are abundant on tree bark and rocks and in moist soil, where they carry on nitrogen
fixation. Some coexist with fungi to form a lichen.
