Immrama (Part One)

The darkened road beneath me wound
A spiral path that twisted 'round
The Moon the only light I found
Dead or lost I seemed

The trail meandered on and on
Amidst the forest, darkly drawn
A midnight journey without dawn
Seemingly I dreamed

The silence was complete - I heard
No sound of wind, nor beast, nor bird
No single, unremembered word
e'er to speak to me

I wandered on beneath the Moon
Which hung there like a silent tune
Like some eternal mystery rune -
Then I saw the Tree

It blocked my path, a sentinel
A guardian mute, which would not tell
Exhausted, at its feet I fell
Weary, cold, and spent

Immense and dark, amazing high
Its trunk soared upward to the sky
Where tattered, moonlit clouds flew by
On and up it went

Its far-off branches clutched the night
Caressed the stars and broke the light
Of She who gazed down, shining white
Whispers of my birth

My hand reached, trembling, touched its bark
The contact shocked me like a spark
Its massive roots spread wide and dark
Deep they drank the earth

And as I gazed down, filled with awe
My eyes grew wide as there I saw
A black hole, like a gaping maw
There beneath the Tree

And then, most wondrous thing of all
From its blank depths I heard a call
A distant voice behind a wall
Beckoning to me

The voice filled all my soul with fear
Yet drew me, unresisting, near
And faint yet clearly I could hear
Someone call my name

Without will I began to crawl
Into that deep and shadowed hall
Like birth-pangs squeezed, the hole so small
Whispering that I came
