GERMAN NAVY VESSELS
ON THE NORTHERN BALTIC SEA AND THE GULF OF FINLAND
SEASONS 1941 AND 1942

.

Season 1941

At the beginning of Operation Barbarossa German naval forces in the northern Baltic Sea, Gulf of Finland and Turku Archipelago consisted mainly of light vessels. Three torpedo boat (S-boot) flotillas and their three depot ships, outpost flotilla with ten armed trawlers and about 20 merchant (supply) vessels as well as a minesweeper flotilla with four ocean tugs were on Finnish waters in June 1941. Five submarines (U-boot) were directed towards the northern Baltic Sea but they stayed away from the Gulf of Finland.

The biggest ships were although six fast and heavy minelayers modified and armed from passenger liners. The only originally purpose-built minelayer was former Norwegian vessel Brummer (originally Albatros, ex- Olav Tryggvason) captured in 1940.

Baltenflotte

On 21 September 1941 a powerful temporary German naval detachment called Baltenflotte (Admiral Otto Ciliax) was formed. It including battleship Tirpitz as a flagship, heavy cruiser Admiral Scheer, light cruisers Nürnberg and Köln, large destroyers Z25, Z26 and Z27 and a torpedo boat flotilla (five S-boote).

Baltenflotte left Schwinemünde on 23 September and arrived south from Åland Islands. German ships were waiting for the Soviet vessels which would possibly tried to escape from the harbours of Leningrad under heavy Luftwaffe bombing. After a few days waiting it was obvious that there would be no such attempt to break through and on 27 September bigger ships were called back to Germany. Tirpitz and Admiral Scheer with two torpedo boats arrived in Gdynia (Gdansk) two days later. Light cruisers Nürnberg and Köln with three destroyers stayed at Rödhamn until September 29 and then too sailed away. Baltenflotte was suspended before the end of September.
