WHAT'S NEW?
The Castle of Viborg
The Medieval Castle of Viipuri [Viborg] photographed in about 1930 by my grandfather.

The castle and the city were founded on the 13th Century by Swedish Marshal Torkel Knutsson. His statue is on the right. The city grew around the castle and a fortified old town. By 1939 Viipuri populated nearly 700 years by the Finns had grown the second largest city of Finland with about 80.000 residents.

In March 1940 evaquated and heavily bombarded city was ceded to USSR. In August 1941 Finnish troops liberated Viipuri and more than half of its former Finnish population moved back. On 20.6.1944 Soviet troops re-occupied Viipuri and the city was re-settled by a totally new population moved from all over USSR. Viipuri was mistakenly thereafter called "an old Russian town" which it never has been. (Photo: Harri Anttonen)
