KNIGHTS OF THE MANNERHEIM CROSS
1941 - 1945

.

.
"To reward for special bravery, for very important results obtained in the battle or for especially meritorous leading
of military acts, a soldier of the Finnish Defence Forces - regardless of one's military rank - may be named as
Knight of the Mannerheim Cross 1st or 2nd Class."

(Statutory regulation on add-ons and changes of the Medal of Liberty and the Cross of Liberty, 16.12.1940)

.

.

Mannerheim Cross is the most honorable and appreciated Finnish military decoration due to its "democratic character". A total of 191 men of all ranks and branches of service have been decorated with the Mannerheim Cross, six of them twice (marked on grey background in the following list) although Marshal of Finland G. Mannerheim and Infantry General E. Heinrichs had both 1st and 2nd Class crosses.

In February 2006 only five Knights are still alive. The following is a complete list of Knights in ascending knight number order and with minor personal details. The rank mentioned is person's rank at the moment the decoration was awarded.

This list is mainly based on the book "Suomen Puolesta - Mannerheimristin ritarit 1941 - 1945" (For Finland - Knights of the Mannerheim Cross 1941 - 1945) by Ilmari Hurmerinta and Jukka Viitanen (HURVI) but the information is inspected and corrected periodically.

Special thanks to Mr. Heikki Lehtonen for corrections and for offering me up-to-date information on the Knights of the Mannerheim Cross.
