Military Training in Finland during the Continuation War

Basic Military Training - Training Centres

During the Continuation War recruits (age classes 1921 - 1926) and additional reserves (age classes 1897 - 1920) were trained in Training Centres (koulutuskeskus, koul.K). Infantry Training Centres (Jalkaväen koulutuskeskus, Jv.koul.K) had two or three training battalions. Artillery Training Centres (Tykistön koulutuskeskus, Tyk.koul.K) had one or two artillery battalions. Some training centres had (reserve) NCO School. Training centres of other arms had usually one battalion composed of various number of training companies, (reserve) NCO School and even an own (reserve) Officer School (for example for engineers). Initially there were 16 infantry and 3 artillery training centres as well as one for tank, engineer, signals, supply and gas protection training.

In October 1941 there were already 21 infantry and 2 artillery training centres as well as one for cavalry, tank, engineer, signals, supply, medical and gas protection training. 17 of them were for training recruits, two for additional or conversion traning and two for convalescents. Others were for special or advanced training for which soldiers were moved from other training centres after basic military training or from front units. In total there were 53 infantry training battalions, four artillery training battalions and additional special training battalions. Total strength of recruits was about 43.000 men.

Basic military training lasted initially only two months (eight weeks) but usually longer. Since 1942 basic training was lengthened to flexible 3 (+ 3) months after which conscripts were sent to so called conscript regiments and battalions for further combat training for the rest of their two years compulsory military service. These training units which were normal front units consisted of young conscripts while reservists were to be in their own units. Squad Leaders (younger NCOs) were earlier trained conscripts. Due to losses and supplements units were although seldom totally free from any reservists.

During the war training of new age classes took place in six phases as follows (year when born):

  • 18.6.1941 - 15.1.1942: 1921/II, 1922

  • 15.1. - 25.10.1942: 1923

  • 25.10.1942 - 28.2.1943: 1924/I

  • 1.3. - 25.10.1943: 1924/II, 1925/I

  • 16.10.1943 - 10.6.1944: 1925/II, 1902 - 1924/D (untrained auxiliary resevists relieved from service)

  • 11.6. - 27.11.1944: 1926/II, 1904 - 1924/Nv II (overaged or earlier relieved auxiliary resevists)

Age class born in 1926 called for duty in 1944 was not used in combat duties during the war. The oldest already trained auxiliary resevists born 1904 - 1908 formed 18 work companies (strength about 4 officers, 20 NCOs and 200 men = 224 men). These were ready since 18.6.1944 except one which was formed as late as in August. Younger auxiliary reservists were usually in supply duties.

New Troops and Supplements for the Army

During the Continuation War Home Troops formed 222 new units (25.750 men) and supplemented Finnish Defence Forces with about 10.000 officers, 38.000 NCOs and 339.000 men (51.000 from additional reserves of the year 1941 [over-aged and somehow disabled auxiliary personnel], 190.000 recruits, 126.000 recovered convalescents (wounded and sick) from military hospitals, 45.000 re-mobilized and re-stationed personnel). These figures may contain same persons several times.
.

Detachment H

Detachment H (Osasto H, Os.H) (Lt.Gen. W. Hägglund, since 24.4.1944 Col. P. Ekholm) was formed in March 1944 for the defence of Helsinki in case Germans would have tried to capture southern Finland. Troops of the detachment were from the training centres around Helsinki.
