Pilots of 1st Flight / Flying
Squadron 24 (1./LLv.24) at Joutseno
probably on 1.2.1940 (standing from left to right): WO Y.
"Pappa" Turkka, Sgt L. Heikinaro,
Deputy Flight Leader Lt. J. "Zamba"
Sarvanto, (sitting left) Cpl (res.) R. Heiramo
and (sitting right) Sgt E. "Lekkeri"
Kinnunen. Lt. Sarvanto was the Finnish top ace of the Winter War with 12 personal and two shared (1/2 and 1/3) kills. On 6.1.1940 he shot down six Ilyushin DB-3M bombers within 4 minutes which is still the unbreakable world record. Lt. P.-E. Sovelius shot down the remaining two of the same 8 plane bomber formation while Sarvanto ran out of ammo! On 1.12.1942
"Lekkeri" Kinnunen became the youngest
Warrant Officer of FAF. His Brewster
was hit by Soviet AA fire and he was killed near
Oranienbaum on 21.4.1943. He scored 3 and one shared (1/2)
kills in Winter War and totalled 22 and 1/2 kills. Sgt Heiramo
was killed in aerial accident after the Winter War on 14.10.1940
and Sgt Heikinaro became bomber pilot. (Photo:

The
following statistics have been compiled by Finnish Kari
Stenman and Kalevi Keskinen. As a main
source I have used their latest ace and kill lists
published in the Finnish printing of Osprey's Aircraft
of the Aces 23 - Finnish Aces of World War 2 (1998 /
2001) (STEKE1). All figures have been rounded to the
closest full or half number because Finns used initially
also shared 1/3, 1/4, 1/5 and even 1/6 kills. That
explains the minor differences between the figures seen
elsewhere. I have added some more information from
other sources, mainly from Keskinen - Stenman - K.
Niska's older book Suomen ilmavoimien historia
11 (Finnish Air Force History # 11): Hävittäjä-ässät
- Finnish Fighter Aces (second edition 1994) (KESTE11).
These two books contain the basic information of this
issue. Major Aerial Combat During the War Winter War 1939 - 1940 The largest aerial combat during the Winter War occurred on 29.2.1940. Soviets had decided to wipe out a major part of the Finnish fighter forces which had been proven tough opponent to them. Finns had decentralized their flights to temporary ice airfields mainly around the south-eastern Finland. Some of these bases remained in secrecy during the whole Winter War but Soviets had managed to find a few of them. The base at Ruokolahti near Immola airfield was attacked at noon by a detachment of six Soviet Polikarpov I-153 and 18 I-16 fighters from 68. IAP. Detachment was led by its Deputy Commander Maj. Gill. Due to inaccuracies and delays in sensory air-surveillance messages Finns expected that the approaching planes would have been bombers and eight Gloster Gladiator II fighters of Detachment Kivinen (LLv.26 and a few pilots from LLv.16) were ordered for interception first. Soviet fighters surprised them just when they were taking off and shot three GLs immediately down and two more during the following dogfight. Seven FRs from LLv.24 led by Lt. T. Huhanantti could also take off during the attack but had to fight against superiority at low level. Lt. Huhanantti
wounded deadly during the combat and probably rammed his FR-94
against Soviet I-16 fighter flown by
Senior Lt. Yefimov (KIA). Another I-16
piloted by Lt. Volokhovitsh (POW) was shot down
by Sgt S. Suikkanen of LLv.26 flying
with GL. One I-153
fighter (pilot unknown, KIA) was also shot down by Mechanic
V. Saunamäki using one ot the two old observer
MGs assigned for AA protection of the base. On Finnish
side three pilots Lt. E. Halme [LLv.16],
Lt. T. Huhanantti [LLv.24] and Danish
volunteer Lt. Carl Mogens Kristensen [LLv.26]
were killed in action but two pilots Danish volunteer Lt.
Povl Christensen [LLv.26] and M.Sgt O.
Lilja [LLv.26] could bail out but both were
badly injured by burns. M.Sgt J. Tolkki [LLv.26]
forced landed and survived only with minor injuries
although his GL destroyed totally. Continuation War 1941 - 1944 On 25.6.1941 Soviets launched a large bombing offensive against Finnish military and civilian targets. Just before noon 15 Soviet SB-2bis (SB-2M103) bombers attacked against military airfield at Joroinen. After unsuccesful bombing they met a patrol of Finnish FIAT G.50 (FA) fighters led by M.Sgt L. Aaltonen. They had managed to take off during the bombing. M.Sgt Aaltonen shot down thee bombers. A flight of six FA fighters of LLv.26 led by Lt. U. Nieminen had tried to intercept bombers already when they were approaching but they flew too south and couldn't find them at once. Now back returning Finns met and attacked the Soviet formation shooting down ten bombers without own losses. On 28.3.1942 a flight of six Curtiss Hawk 75A (CU) fighters from LLv.32 led by Lt. P. Nurminen were protecting the conquer parade of Suursaari island on the Gulf of Finland. During the parade another CU flight of six planes led by Lt. J. Arnkill was alarmed to help intercepting three approaching Soviet formations of a total of 29 Polikarpov I-153 and I-16 fighters. Finns attacked Soviet fighters east from Suursaari island after which aerial combat reigned about an hour. During the dogfight 10 I-153s and seven I-16s were shot down without own losses. Soviet planes could not reach the island and parade was not disturbed. On 6.4.1942 a flight of eight Finnish Brewster B-239 (BW) fighters led by Lt. L. Pekuri which were returning from a reconnaissance mission met a formation of seven Soviet Ilyushin DB-3 and Petlyakov Pe-2 bombers escorted by 18 Hawker Hurricane II and Lavochin LaGG-3 fighters over Tiiksjärvi (East Karelia). During the combat Finns shot down two DBs and 12 Hurricanes without own losses. On 16.8.1942 a flight of six BWs from Le.Lv.24 led by Capt. J. Karhunen met eight SB-2bis bombers escorted by 15 I-16 and three LaGG-3 fighters over Seiskari island on Gulf of Finland. During the combat 11 I-16s were shot down without own losses. On 18.8.1942 a flight of six BWs from Le.Lv.24 led by Lt. H. Wind met about 60 Soviet planes near Seivästö (Gulf of Finland). Finns sent a request for help and four BWs led by Capt. J. Karhunen and yet another formation of three BWs led by Lt. A. Lumme took off and directed towards Seivästö. During the largest dogfight so far Soviets lost 12 I-16s, one Hurricane II and two Pe-2 bombers. One Finnish BW was also shot down. On 5.9.1942 reconnaissance patrol of two CUs from Le.Lv.32 led by WO E. Koskinen met a Soviet formation of about 40 planes over Lotinanpelto (Olonets Isthmus). Four more CUs led by Capt. A. Bremer arrived to assist and during the hard dogfight six Soviet LaGG-3s, four I-16s, two Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-3s and one Pe-2 bomber were shot down without own losses. On 18.4.1943 two Finnish fighter flights led by Lt. A. Lumme (seven BW) and Lt. J. Savonen (six BW) from Le.Lv.24 intercepted eight Soviet Ilyushin Il-2 ground-attack planes escorted by about 25 LaGG-3 and Lavochin La-5 and about 25 Yakovlev Yak-1 fighters on Gulf of Finland between Seiskari and Kronstadt. During aerial combat Finns shot down eight LaGG-3s, seven Yak-1s, two La-5s and two Il-2s. Finnish planes returned back to their bases without losses. On 21.4.1943 a flight of six BWs from Le.Lv.24 led by Capt. J. Karhunen and later also another flights led by Capt. I. Törrönen (five BW) and Capt. J. Sarvanto (six BW) intercepted a formation of 35 Soviet fighters south from Seiskari on Gulf of Finland. Soviet losses were ten Yak-1s, five LaGG-3s and four La-5s. Finnish losses were two BWs of which another was shot down by Soviet heavy AA fire. On 23.9.1943 a formation of seven BWs from Le.Lv.24 led by Lt. H. Wind attacked a Soviet formation near Oranienbaum. Also four Finnish Messerchmitt Bf 109G-2s (MT) from Le.Lv.34 led by Lt. L. Pekuri joined the combat. Finns shot down seven LaGG-3s, six La-5s, one Yak-1 and one Il-2 without own losses. On 17.5.1943 a formation of 11 Finnish MTs from Le.Lv.34 led by Maj. E. Luukkanen intercepted Soviet formation of 27 Pe-2s escorted by 15 Yakovlev Yak-9s and La-5s which were directing towards Finnish town Hamina. Finns attacked surprisingly from the below and shot immediately eight Pe-2s down. During the dogfight which followed Finns shot down three Yak-9s while losing one MT. On 19.6.1944 eight Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6s from HLe.Lv.34 led by Capt. O. Puhakka intercepted tens of Soviet planes between Viipuri and Koivisto over Karelian Isthmus. About ten minutes later 10 MTs from HLe.Lv.24 led by Capt. H. Wind joined the fight. Finns shot down two La-5s, three Airacobras, six Pe-2s, two DB-3Fs and two Il-2s without losses. In the morning on 20.6.1944 10 MTs from HLe.Lv.34 led by Lt. V. Pokela and eight MTs from HLe.Lv.24 led by Capt. H. Wind intercepted Soviet planes between Viipuri and Koivisto. Finns met tens of Soviet planes and during a combat and dogfight shot down four Yak-9s, two La-5s, one LaGG-3, two DB-3F and two Il-2s. MTs returned without own losses. About one hour later another aerial combat took place between eight MTs from HLe.Lv.24 led by Capt. J. Myllymäki, a MT patrol led by Capt. H. Wind and six MTs from HLe.Lv.34 led by Lt. R. Valli and tens of Soviet planes on the same area as the first one. Four Yak-9s, two LaGG-3s, one La-5, one probably MiG-3, five Airacobras, one Pe-2 and one Il-2 were shot down without own losses. Yet about an hour later five MTs from HLe.Lv.24 led by Lt. K. Metsola and four MTs from HLe.Lv.34 led by Lt. P. Myllylä were securing Finnish troops on the Bay of Viborg. They intercepted a Soviet formation of eight Il-2s escorted by tens of fighters. Finns shot down five Il-2s and during a dogfight three La-5s, one Airacobra and one probably missed Polikarpov U-2 reconnaissance plane without own losses. Soviets lost 36 planes only alone during these three aerial fights. On 23.6.1944 eight MTs from HLe.Lv.24 led by Capt. J. Myllymäki intercepted 20 Il-2s and 10 R-10s escorted by 15 fighters. Finns shot down six Il-2s, three La-5s, one Airacobra and one North-American P-51 Mustang (note: it was probably Yak-9) without own losses. On 24.6.1944 eight MTs from HLe.Lv.34 led by Capt. O. Puhakka attacked against about 20 Il-2 ground-attack planes which operated against Tali (Karelian Isthmus) escorted by tens of fighters. Also five MTs from HLe.Lv.24 led by WO V. Pyötsiä which were returning from the escort mission of Finnish Blenheim bombers joined the combat. Soviet losses were seven Il-2s, one La-5, one Airacobra and one Mustang (see the note above). MTs didn't suffer losses. On 28.6.1944 11 MTs from HLe.Lv.24 led by Capt. H. Wind intercepted about 20 Soviet Il-2s and 20 Pe-2s escorted by tens of fighters. During the aerial combat Finns shot down eight Il-2s, two Pe-2s and one fighter. One MT flown by seriously wounded Capt. Wind was damaged in forced landing. Later during the same day eight MTs from HLe.Lv.34 led by Capt. O. Puhakka and eight MTs from HLe.Lv.24 led by Lt. O. Puro intercepted a formation of about 60 to 70 Soviet Il-2 ground attack planes which were attacking against Finnish troops at Tali escorted by about 40 fighters. Six Il-2s, two Mustangs (see the note above), two Yak-9s and one Airacobra were shot down. MTs didn't suffer aircraft losses but Lt. Puro was wounded in action. On 30.6.1944 seven MTs from HLe.Lv.34 led by Maj. E. Luukkanen and seven MTs from HLe.Lv.24 led by Lt. K. Karhila attacked against about 200 Soviet planes over Tali - Juustila area. Soviet losses were nine Yak-9s, one La-5, one Airacobra, one Il-2, three Pe-2s and two DB-3Fs. All MTs returned back to bases without losses. On 2.7.1944 35 Pe-2s and 40 Il-2s escorted by tens of fighters attacked against the airfield at Lappeenranta. They were encountered by 11 MTs from HLe.Lv.24 (from Lappeenranta) and 8 MTs from HLe.Lv.34 (from Taipalsaari) led by Lt. P. Myllylä. Finns shot down 11 Il-2s, four Pe-2s and one Yak-9. Attack was not a great success to Soviets because only two MTs were destroyed in the ground and one was damaged in forced landing. All MTs returned back to their bases. |

Notes: Squadron in parenthesis means temporary subordination from LLv.26. * On 29.1.1940 reserve officer 2Lt O. Puhakka was testing Fokker FR-76 armed with additional two 20 mm Oerlikon cannons in wing pods in State Aircraft Factory (VL) at Tampere when he noticed a missed Soviet DB-3 bomber from 45. BAP flying over the field. Puhakka couldn't reach closer than about 700 meters away from the fast bomber but tried to hit the plane with guns. Although only one cannon worked he could estimate the trajectory of bullets and destroy the bomber with three short burst using only 18 shells. Lt. Puhakka became later Cadet Officer. He was in Cadet School between 1940 - 1941. |
