COASTAL SECTOR

Rannikkolohko 1939 - 1940

During the Winter War [Coastal] Sector [Rannikkolohko or Lohko, Lo.] was a regional coastal defence unit which consisted of coastal artillery and assigned artillery and infantry units. It was equal to a field artillery regiment.

Typically coastal sector was organized as follows:

Esikunta (E/Lo.) (Staff / Sector)

Toimituskomppania (Toim.K) (Delivery Company)

Miinakomppania (MiinaK) (Mine Company) Equipped with motor boats.

Coastal batteries were either "super heavy" [järeä, 203 - 305 mm], "heavy" [raskas, 102 - 155 mm] or "light" [kevyt, 37 - 76 mm]. They were usually fixed but could be also movable.

Bicycle battalions, separate (infantry) battalions, field replacement battalions and separate MG, bicycle or infantry companies or platoons could be assigned or subordinated to coastal sector, sub-sector or even fort.
