| Game : Zelda II The Adventure of Link System : Nintendo Entertainment System Rating : |
| Yes this is probably the most unique of all the Zelda games. Definately. And that is where it gets a 4. For originality. Even though... don't get me wrong... it was still really good! I remember because this was the first Zelda game I ever played or owned. It was stupendous and needless to say... (cause i was like 6 then). I couldn't beat the last boss. I got there but for one reason or another (I don't remember) I couldn't beat him. As a matter of fact I never really tried. Just recently I found my ancient cartridge (which didn't save games anymore) and beat it all in one sitting cause of the save game problem. Not that it is a short game! It is a little lengthy giving it a good feel. I mean... It has much more of a plot than the first one I suppose. Ganon hasn't officially returned yet but his minions are in the process of bringing him back. Zelda was put into a deep sleep and it is up to you to destroy his minions before he shows up again. Not that this is an easy task. Another neat thing about this game is that it really does have some neat twists in it. I mean, sometimes people you talk to in villages will actually be a follower of Ganon and attacks you! That's something you don't see on a regular basis anywhere else. Now a great portion of this game is played in a 2-D sides-scrolling Mario fashion. As a matter of fact you only go overhead when you are out in the field. Hence all battles fought out there send you to a different screen to fight it out. You don't have to defeat all the enemies but really pick one way to go (for you are in the center) and fight your way to the side. This is a unique system that is not in many other games. Dungeouns are permanently side-scrolling and you use mostly elevators to traverse floors. They all go underground and one or two bring you back up to the surface at a different point that the one of entry. This game has many interesting points of it like the attack-in-the-middle-of-town example. Baddies will pop out of statues when you least expect and the falling blocks from the ceiling are always fun. Now another thing of originality. You level up. Yeah that's right you gain levels from experience you get from defeating badguys. Those levels will upgrade either your total health value (which dissapointed me as a bar instead of hearts), magic value, or attack power. All of these are very welcome and you'll be looking forward to each level. And yet another thing. You have a constant list of magic and it is as usefull as your sword. You use spells for a variety of things whether it be for defence (which is the most usefull) or even turning yourself into a fairy. Which is kinda neat too. The defence one I recomend using at the beginning of every boss. One last point of originality is the musical score. Every song seems to be different. I mean every one. I know that it is nearly the same way in Zelda 5 but still it is also incredibly recognisable. I don't know why. I mean the overworld almost starts the same way as the original Zelda song but then pulls other stuff. The dungeoun music is way cool also. The remix for Super Smash Bros Melee is AWSOME with that opening guitar. The soundtrack is completely original and worth getting. Pet peeves for this game is the system is kinda cool but has some flaws. The plot is wierd. And all of the bosses (with the exeption of the last one) seems to be the same. I mean it's a jump-and-hit-the-head thing. Over and over. And personally when I looked at the sprite when I was six It took me like 8 years to figure which way his arms went. When I was six it look like he broke them so you can see the shield and sword at once. It's just wierd. The game wasnt' very constant with exiting points here and there but they don't wrap up things very good. One more thing I forgot to mention was the way to duel. You will fight an assortment of baddies you have a sword and shield just like you and they even raise and lower them to attack your weak spot. I like duelling with these things cause It's a real challenge you don't see in many other places. It sometimes gets annoying when they pit the same guys agaisn't you over and over but you will like developing strategies to defeat these guys under different conditions. Anyway, the game was good and definately worth at least trying to feel it up. Don't forget to e-mail me on any opinions of yours sign my guestbook to flame me or whatever. C ya. |
