chapter 5

-Well, that sounds like a perfect ending of this evening, Howie said one silent moment later.
-Yeah. So call the drivers.
Everyone started to look for their cell phones and I went to AJ.
-Maybe you should give me your car keys.
-You cant drive.
-You cant either.
-Theres no problem, Brian came to us. -AJ, just call Keegan to pick you up. You can come to get your car at tomorrow.
-He has a night off.
Oh wow. What a mess. Like he didnt knew when we left that he was about to have few glasses of wine. And I didnt even have the driving license.
-Lets just call the cab, I suggested.
-AJ. You cant go home in that state by a cab. You know what a hullabaloo will come out of that, Brian reminded. -Youll just gonna stay over. Lee dear, in what condition are our guest rooms?
Leighanne came to us.
-The other is fine. One is under repairs and in one...
-My wife has secret artistic projects in that, Brian threw his arms around Leighanne. -So one of you just has to sleep on the couch.
-That would be me, I said as fast as I could. -Really. Im used to sleep in strange places.
-Our sofa isnt that weird, Leighanne laughed.
-If I cant go home it doesnt matter where I sleep. Lady should always have a chance to pick but this time youll take the room, I sleep down here.
-No, Ill stay here and you go to upstairs.
-Gash, if its that difficult we make two beds upstairs. OK?
I think that either of us were comfortable with that decision but Brian was our host. So we just nodded.

I went into a guest room and looked around. So that was Brians idea of two beds? Leighanne came to the door.
-Im sorry. He didnt remember that its a indivisible king-size bed.
-Yeah, right. So would you give me a blanket, Ill sleep downstairs.
-So what youre saying is...?
-That I dont sleep in here?
-Oh, Leighanne said. -I thought that maybe you and AJ...
-What? I laughed. -Oh now. We cant stand each other.
-Well, thats it then. We assumed that you just wanted to keep it as a secret.
-Trust me Lee, theres nothing going on between me and him.
-So why cant you sleep in here then? That bed is wide enough for two person.
-OK. If AJ doesnt have anything against it.
-Im sure he doesnt. Do you need a pajama?
-If you got some old T-shirt. That would do.
-OK. Ill bring you some.

I was in bed. AJ was out on the balcony having a cigarette. I stared the roof. The mood was very uncomfortable. AJ had been about to leave downstairs but I convinced him to stay, that it would be rude to bother Lee since she went to bed earlier that Brian and AJ who were talking downstairs.
-I wont bite you, I had said.
-Im not so sure about that, AJ had replied. And went out.

Moments later he came back in, closed the door and climbed into bed.
-So you had something to do with the fact that Maddy left so early?
-Partly yes.
-Shes a sweet girl.
-Everything Im not.
I didnt say that to get any compassion. But obviously AJ took it like that.
-Thats true. Shes beautiful, polite, knows how to act.
I couldnt help getting tears into my eyes. I tried to hold them back but you know how it goes, once you start to cry it doesnt even matter why youd started, you just cant stop.
AJ turned to see me.
-Oh, I didnt mean it like that.
-Sure you did! I mumbled.
-Anna. You are a great girl. For someone else.
-And what makes you think that I even would like to be your girl after the way youve been treating me?
-What? What do you mean?
-Never mind.
I turned my back on him.
-No. Tell me what you meant.
-Just let me sleep would you?
AJ gave up. But I couldnt sleep. I kept crying silently until I fell asleep.
