chapter 21

I didn’t make it into bed without meeting also Leighanne.
-Anna? she asked when I was passing their room.
-Yeah?
-Come on in.
I did as told and went in. Leighanne was doing her make-up. I stood by the door.
-Anna, I’m sorry, her reflection looked at me. -I had no right to ask you about your personal life.
I sat down on the bed.
-Actually you did. And you do. I’m your guest, and even if I’m a big girl already I can understand that you get worried from time to time. And I’m thankful for that. Is just... It has been quite messy, this life of mine. With AJ, and everything. And sometimes I’m just annoyed.
-I have a habit to stick my nose on everything, Leighanne admitted.
-And it’s OK. So I’m sorry too.
-Apology accepted.
-As yours too.
-You were down at the studio last night?
-Yeah.
-You’re already moving on. Somehow. But you haven’t changed your mind about that gala?
-No I haven’t.
-That’s OK. But if there’s even a minor chance, let me know.
-I will.

I left the room. Why didn’t I ask Leighanne about the song? Because it was so much easier this way. I pretended I didn’t know, she pretended she didn’t know and I wouldn’t have to answer any awkward questions. In the end, what Leighanne knew, or believed knowing, was so little compared to what has happened.

I woke up when hearing loud voices from downstairs. I rubbed my eyes and found out the time. It was 5 p.m. I got up and put something on.

All the guys were on the house, going around in a hurry. I came to the stairs when Brian was going down.
-Evening Anna. Slept well?
-No not really, I said but he was already gone. I stood there looking them rushing, and then left down in need of something to drink.
AJ was coming up. And there we stood in the middle of stairs. I looked around but suddenly everyone had disappeared. I heard some voices from kitchen.
I looked into his eyes. I wanted him to say something. Anything. Something to make it easier, make it clearer, make it go away... What was I thinking?
Instead he touched me. He put his right hand on my cheek and I leaned on it like cat desiring caress.
-ALEX? Howie yelled from upstairs.
AJ let his hand fall and started to climb the stairs up.
-What? I’m right here, you don’t have to shout.
-Obviously I do. You didn’t hear me for the first two times.
-Whatever.
AJ passed Howie who then saw me.
-Anna!
-Hi sweetie.
-Listen, we are in terrible hurry, but I’ll see you tomorrow?
-What’s then?
-The gala remember? See you there.
-I’m not coming.
But Howie then again was already going.
-What?
-I’m not coming!
-Talk about that later!
I shook my head and headed downstairs.
