We have examples from Noah, Saleh, Muhammad and others regarding whether or not they required that people pay them in any fashion for bringing the revelations of God.

- And my people, I do not ask you for money, my reward is with God. Nor will I turn away those who believe, for they will meet their Lord. But I see that you are a people who are ignorant. (11:29)

- And to 'Aad was sent their brother Hud. He said: "My people, serve God, you have no god besides Him; you are simply conjecturing. My people, I do not ask you for any wage, my wage is from the One who initiated me. Will you not understand?" (11:50-51)

- And you do not ask them for a wage for it, it is but a reminder to the worlds. (12:104)

- And We have not sent you except as a bearer of good news and a warner. Say: "I do not ask you for a wage; only for whoever chooses to make a path to his Lord." (25:56-57)

- When their brother Noah said to them: "Will you not be righteous? I am to you a trustworthy messenger. So be aware of God and obey me. And I do not ask you for a wage, for my reward is upon the Lord of the worlds." (26:106-109)

- For their brother Saleh said to them: "Will you not be righteous? I am to you a clear messenger. So be aware of God and obey me. And I do not ask you for a wage, for my reward is upon God the Lord of the worlds." (26:142-145)

- For Shu'ayb said to them: "Will you not be righteous? I am to you a trustworthy messenger. So be aware of God and obey me. And I do not ask you for a wage, for my reward is upon God the Lord of the worlds." (26:177-180)

- Say: I have not asked you for any wage; you can keep it. My wage is from God, and He is witness over all things. (34:47)

- Say: I do not ask you for any wage, nor am I a fraud. It is but a reminder for the worlds. (38:86-87)

- Or do you ask them for any wage, and they are burdened thereby? (52:40)

- Are you asking them for money, so they are burdened by the fine? (68:46)

There is to be no payment from the people for bringing God's revelation by command of the Spirit. The reward that is looked for is from God, not from the people. So those whom we are to follow are not those who ask for any wage, but we are to follow the guided, who ask for no wage.

And a man came running from the farthest part of the city, saying: "O my people, follow the messengers. Follow those who do not ask you for any wage, and are guided." (36:20-21)
