| ALL of the photos in this gallery, except for resizing, are presented straight from the camera. Unlike most or all of the other photos on this site, those linked below have not been in the least bit cropped or tweaked in PhotoShop. EACH of the series in this gallery is an attempt to distill the essence of an experience, a vignette from life, or just an interval of time, down to a few select images. UNLESS otherwise noted, the photos in this gallery were taken with the Sony DSC F-707. |
| OK, for our first 'Life Happens' photo adventure, we have for your viewing an unintentional exercise in photojournalism. On the morn of August 21st (my brother Garret's b-day, btw), 2002, I boarded Amtrak's Surfliner in Solana Beach and rode the rails to LA's Union Station, where I switched trains and climbed aboard the Coast Starlight, bound for Oakland to visit with some friends, eat good food and drink better wine. TWENTY miles from my destination, the station at Jack London Square, the train abruptly lost power and rapidly decelerated to a stop amidst a cloud of dust and smoke. We were already an hour late. It would another hour before we learned that the train had derailed. It would be two more hours before I arrived in Oakland. And it would be another three days before I learned that seven people had been injured in the incident (though only one required hospitalization). IN between LA and Oakland (well, Hayward actually), I took a few pictures ... some landscape, some candids, some 'artsy stuff' ... and then the train wreck, which gave me the chance to play documentarian for a (hopefully) once-in-a-lifetime event. It also gave me the chance to really test the F707's infra-red capabilities. Overall, I like the results, and some of the individual shots are quite nice ... and one of them is downright spooky. |
