Surgery

When is surgery medically necessary?

About 70 percent of people with Crohn's disease require surgery for complications such as obstruction, abscesses or perforation. Surgery may relieve symptoms for several years, but it's not considered to be "a cure". The disease often recurs.

Other Options

Partial removal of your small intestine or colon:
If Crohn’s is confined to a  segment of your small intestine or colon, your doctor may remove the diseased segment of bowel, then rejoin the two healthy ends.

Colostomy (Interactive Flash presentation by:PEI)
Your doctor removes the diseased portion of your colon, and may remove the anus and rectum and close the anal area. A section of your colon is pulled through an incision in your abdomen to create an opening (stoma). A pouch is securely fastened over the opening to collect wastes.

Ileostomy
The entire colon and rectum are removed. A portion of your small intestine is used to form an opening in your abdomen, similar to what’s done in a colostomy. As in a colostomy, an attached pouch collects wastes.

Stricturplasty
If there is a short area of narrowing (stricture), your doctor may be able to make an incision along the side of the narrow area of your bowel, flare out the sides and sew the bowel back together. This can make a larger passageway way without removing any of the bowel.

Small intestine transplant
This procedure hasn’t yet been widely used and is still being researched.

Garden of Life Nutritional Supplements
IMHO, these are some of THE best nutritional supplements for people suffering with any form of IBD or chronic illness. They have a superb probiotic formula which utilizes HSOs (Homeostatic Soil Organisms) called, Primal Defense (of which I personally take myself), as well as a wonderful diet supplement called, "Perfect Food" (which I think is great for Crohnies or anyone on a roughage or fiber restricted diet)!  I would highly recommend these products. I buy mine from Health food Emporium
