Character Bios

I've found, in recent years, that one of the best ways to inspire creativity is through roleplaying games. Gaming has helped me put myself in the place of my characters, see them more as people than as combinations of words, and pay more attention to the little details that make characters come alive. Many of my favorite stories and characters have stemmed from the games I've played. I've included some information on the different lives I've developed during my years as a gamer. Eventually, I'd like to have a separate page for each character, but right now I just have short bios for each of them.

World of Darkness Characters

Dyllandri Albion: This Toreador from Vampire: The Masquerade was a tall, blonde filmmaker with an unpleasant attitude and a strange problem: she was haunted by the ghost of Salvador Dali, who would taunt her and throw bits of flaming celery at her (which did nothing good for her negative state of mind.) She participated in a single campaign before I decided to retire her.

Fina Brink: (also known as Fina #1) The second World of Darkness character I ever created, Fina is still one of my favorites although I haven't played her in almost two years. Fina is a young Malkavian vampire who is by turns childlike and deadly, easily recognized by the colorful ribbons she wears in her hair. Her mortal life was brief and tragic--she spent most of her teenage years committed to an insane asylum, a lonely life that ended when another inmate Embraced her and introduced her to the world of vampires. Too late, Fina learned that the charismatic man was not what he seemed--Mathew, her Sire, was a member of the Sabbat who regularly committed heinous crimes against his fellow vampires and was grooming her to be his personal assassin. She was able to escape from him, and tried to go back home for solace, but her parents realized that she had become something monstrous and turned her away. That night, Fina's madness began to take hold; she killed both of her parents and set out on her own, trying to convince herself that their deaths had been just an accident.
In the next few years, Fina crossed the United States, fleeing her angry and vengeful Sire and sinking ever deeper into derangement. For a while, she traveled with a Gangrel knight who had been in stasis for centuries, Sir Edmund, but they parted ways after a misbegotten adventure in which they were both temporarily endowed with faerie sight. Fina vanished for a while, hiding from Mathew's dark assassin Jezebel, and emerged a few years later with a new identity and a new face (facilitated by a Tzimisce shapeshifter who taught her the Vicissitude skill.) Fina has grown up a lot since her early days, and she is now beginning to realize the danger she is in. Recently she has been known to hang around college campuses, trying to Bloodbond any strong vampires she can find, in an attempt to find someone who will protect her from Mathew and his minions.

Jezebel Arlin: This Malkavian vampire is another one of the diabolic Mathew's spawn, with one notable exception: where Mathew failed with Fina, he succeeded with Jezebel. She is a mad, sadistic vampire with a penchant for cheap cigarettes and interrogation techniques, and her only concern in unlife is her mission: to find Mathew's wayward child Fina and return her to him for retribution. Fortunately for me (her habits make playing her difficult...) she doesn't show up much.

Yasmine Szymanski: This Pittsburgh native was a very successful erotic dancer who truly loved what she was doing with her life...until a Toreador vampire took an interest in her art and Embraced her. Too late, Yasmine realized that being undead did not do good things for her inspiration or her state of mind. She has appeared only once, in Dean and Kat's Vampire campaign in March 2002, and her lot in life hasn't improved at all; in this storyline, humanity has been reduced to the state of beasts, effectively destroying her preferred clientele. No wonder the poor girl is thinking of going Sabbat.

Lady Gwenivere Percivere Alicorn-Bong: This pooka changeling, who will assure anyone who asks that she is actually a Sidhe duchess with unusual features, was created to be a female counterpart to Jason's notorious lemming pooka, Lem. Gwennie is also a lemming pooka; she possesses her race's inability to tell the truth and has completely made up the story of her nobility. However, she's pretty and charismatic, and therefore she has attracted a group of eight followers who are searching for the Chosen One of Brightness, Lem. They periodically find Lem and rejoice at their victory, but eventually they get bored and go away, then begin their search again. Gwennie's retinue is utterly useless in any battle, social, or political situation; their usual course of action in any case is to stand around and stare at the walls. Gwennie has only appeared in one campaign.

Wheel of Time Characters

Fina Sedai, Brown Ajah: Serafina al'Bessill Ravenlock, Aes Sedai, has to be one of my favorite characters ever. I've played her in multiple Wheel of Time online campaigns, and she has developed such a complex and interesting storyline that I'm writing an entire novel about her. Unfortunately, because of copyright constraints, I'll probably never be able to publish it, but maybe I'll put it on here to download eventually. Fina started out in the Salidar Tower back in 1997 (yes, I liked the name so much that I had to use it again...), and since then, has appeared in the New White Tower as well. Fina is a shy, intellectual Brown Sister who seems to attract both adventure and misfortune. In her life, she has been sucked into an alternate dimension, fought an evil undead Dreadlord who attempted to use her as a conduit back to the world, given birth to a ta'veren, and bridged the gap between worlds to protect her family from a nameless threat. Fina's greatest test is yet to come, though; in an attempt to save her daughters' lives, she must travel between worlds once again, this time without her beloved husband, gleeman Kinson Ravenlock. She is scheduled to appear at the Tower of Chasaline sometime in the near future.

Claudia Ravenlock: This young ta'veren, also from the Wheel of Time online RP, is the oldest daughter of Fina Sedai. The product of a brutal rape by the dreadlord Bredan Dair Tirallan, Claudia is a pawn in her evil father's attempts to escape his prison in Tel'Aran'Rhiod. Claudia is only eight years old and doesn't understand her strange powers yet, but she is in great danger and must quickly receive training in the One Power before her father's influence can turn her to the Dark. She, her mother, and her little sister Je'aan are currently traveling to the Tower of Chasaline for haven from the evil forces pursuing them. Another little note about Claudia: she is also a member of the Reborn Court of King Arthur (the webring of which is found on the main page), acting as the Evil Child of the Court.

Marisa Edavar: Marisa, an Accepted at the Tower of Chasaline, is a Saldaean army captain's daughter who arrived at the ToC after a harrowing four years of slavery at the hands of the Seanchan. Marisa was a damane with a particularly cruel mistress, and when she was finally freed after a battle with some Aiel Wise Ones, she was nearly broken in mind and spirit. Stricken with a terror of authority and a paranoid distrust of all channelers, Marisa spent a lonely novicehood at the Tower...until one day, the strain of her trauma became too much for her and she snapped. The Accepted fell into madness and set forth with the objective to destroy the Tower, but she only got as far as incinerating a few walls and tapestries before the Aes Sedai were able to calm her down. Their kindness and friendship helped her overcome her insanity, and Marisa was quickly packed off to do some penance at an isolated farm until she recuperated from her breakdown. She is currently returning to the Tower, hoping to become a Gray Sister when she is Raised.

Star Wars Characters

Callista Emmeril, Padawan Jedi: Apprentice Jedi, novice seductress, ex-circus performer, and erstwhile cook, this 17-year-old redhead from the agricultural planet Coria has had a busy few months. Callista, the daughter of deceased Jedi Master Corbin Emmeril, has only recently found out her impressive heritage and, indeed, what it means to be a Jedi at all. Her father's dying wish sent her (after a 3-year hiatus with a circus that ended in grand larceny) to be trained by Jedi Master Kadan, a journey that has led to quite a few interesting adventures. Having joined forces with an arrogant smuggler named Brent Runner, a drunken Jawa named Rathkit, and a Jedi teacher with one or two dark secrets of his own, Callista is now on several missions: to avenge her father's death (which means facing off with a self-proclaimed Sith Lord), to pay off her lengthy indenture to Brent Runner as ship's cook, and to understand her own growing powers.

Eneshi Telin: This Force-sensitive Zabrakian (same race as Darth Maul) investigative reporter has shown up a few times in the Rogue Planet, Litterbox, and most recently, Sith Campaigns. Armed with a cool trenchcoat, an uncanny ability with blasters, a lot of questions, and a cheerful probe droid named Mouse, she has shown great interest in Selenian/Ansylvan relations and the anti-Imperial actions of the Noghri Hazard. Recently, Eneshi has come under fire for her Force practices; she does not seem to follow the Jedi code, and has been accused of following the Dark Side, to the extent that some other characters suspect her of stealing a valuable holocron containing an old Sith Lord's teachings. Eneshi firmly denies the allegations, stating that she sees Force abilities to be the same as any other improvable skill, without any mystical nonsense about good and evil attached to it. Along with her Tusken Raider bodyguard, Urroograar, Eneshi is currently stranded in an odd sort of time anomaly.
If you want to find out more about Callista and Eneshi, go to Drew's RPG Page, where information on his Star Wars RPG can be found. Their stats, a few memorable quotes, and some of their adventures are up on that page.

Dungeons and Dragons Characters

Goldmoon, Cleric of Shrubbery: This 30th(!) level cleric was my introduction to the world of gaming back in the primeval days of high school. She started as my character in an AOL chat room (the Red Dragon Inn), but moved onto Jason's world, Ludicrous Land, as she developed. Goldmoon was the high priestess of Shrubbery, as close to a demigod that a human can come, and had the useful ability of being able to look in the Player's Handbook and cast any clerical spell she wanted whenever she wanted, not to mention being able to call on a god whenever she got into too much trouble. I understand after more gaming experience that this is pretty much a blasphemy to PC fairness--she'd even be a mean NPC to throw at people--so I'm glad she's been retired...there wasn't really much challenge to playing her anyway. Oh well...live and learn.

Larina Farmer: This is another of my favorites, a young witch who lives on Adam's gaming world, Galon. She is a member of the adventuring party called Fourth Group, and more information can be found about both her and 4th Group at the link shown above. In brief, Rina is a farmer's daughter who hails from a strict fundamentalist village that worships the farming god Malegrin. Despite these humble beginnings, her life is a dangerous one--the most evil god on Galon has his eye on her and the untrained powers she holds--and she must deal with an unwanted pregnancy, the stigma that society places on witches, and her own expanding perspective of the world as she continues her travels.

Cordelia Terasin: Cordelia is a member of the Highmoon Group, an offshoot of 4th Group centered in Galon's biggest city. She has grown up believing that she is a minor noblewoman and the foster daughter of Highmoon's viscount Talion Arabane, but her past is shrouded in shadows so deep even she isn't entirely certain who she really is. She has begun to learn recently, however, that her forgotten childhood involves a clan of magic-using gypsies, a secret mystical ritual, and one of Highmoon's darkest secrets: the underground slave trade.
Cordelia has been attempting to break free of her sheltered lifestyle, however, and she has recently gotten involved with several perilous ventures: the fight against a religious cult that would make Highmoon into a dead city, a desperate struggle to keep Highmoon's humans and elves from degenerating into civil war, and perhaps her most dangerous battle yet: a last-chance effort to free herself from Lord Arabane, the master who keeps her captive in a prison of silk and velvet.

Kaya Sunchaser: (soon to come)

Kieran Sunchaser: (soon to come)

Elysia Sweetwater: (soon to come)

Natalia Anjell: This quarter-faerie bard, who resides on the gaming world of Kaerith, underwent a vast change when I decided to revamp her for an online campaign. She started out as an evil Estivinian highway robber, but that character fell through so I created the current incarnation with the same name. Nat lives with her family in the orc-occupied Bernish city of Bornhem, and her life is a happy one except for one difficulty: her grandmother, who is a member of the Seelie Court. Nat must constantly deal with her faerie relatives' interference in her life, especially that of her mischievous cousin Thornsparrow. She has not ventured out to adventure in Kaerith, but it is only a matter of time before she will become old enough to set out on her own.

Flontara the Red: (new bio to be up soon).

Tagnox of the Stone Hammer: Tagnox, an extremely simpleminded wemic who once allegedly rescued a starving and insane woman who had wandered into his homeland, is my first male character. He entered a 2nd Group session rather abruptly when Flontara the Red summoned him to the Colosseum at Talagran, to aid Rondax the wemic in a gladiatorial fight. Tagnox befriended the group and later returned to help them fight an evil necromancer in the Free City of Serin. He is old friends with Flontara, and is willing to drop everything he's doing to provide a little muscle when her magic isn't enough.

Three: Also known OOC as Three of Nine (a Star Trek fan named her), this 11-year-old street urchin from the Free City of Serin is one of the founding members of Kaerith's new Orange Group. Three started out as a small, filthy, starving, illiterate child of indeterminate race, gender, and origin, hired to sweep floors at the Tower Inn. Since then, Three has made an enemy of a powerful wizard, alienated two churches, and encountered many undead things. Not much is known about her yet.

Kiana Rincondell: Bio to be up soon
