What exactly is a Toastmaster?
It's an individual like yourself, someone with a sincere desire to become a more effective speaker. By joining our club, you become a member of the Toastmasters International organization. Since 1924, Toastmasters has been a mainstay for building confident communicators in all walks of life.
Do you have to be a professional speaker?
Not at all. Most members of our club are AEGON employees who joined in order to be more effective in meetings and occasional presentations. We also have members from other companies who have similar goals, but find our schedule more convenient.
Where and when does Toastmasters meet?
The group usually meets Wednesdays from noon to 1 p.m. in the Private Dining Room located at 2700 West Plano Parkway in Plano Texas. If you have a conflict with the timing, we can help you locate another club meeting that accommodates your schedule. Just call 972-881-6000 and ask the operator for a member of Toastmasters for assistance.
What can I expect to see and hear?
A fun and effectively run meeting with an agenda, several speakers and evaluations. If time allows, we include a "Table Topics" section for one to two minutes of impromptu discussion about a specific subject. Occasionally there is a Listener, a Jokemaster, or a special theme for the day.
How do I become a member and what does it cost?
Do I have to give a speech right away?
Only if that's your choice. We have lots of opportunities for you to get comfortable in front of a group before attempting a speech. The club needs a number of helpers, so you could participate as a Vote Counter, "AH" Counter or a Timer. You'll gain valuable experience speaking for just a few moments, while actively taking part in the business of the meeting.
What if I need help preparing for a speech, do you have resources?
When you become a member, you'll be assigned a mentor who will help you practice and prepare your speech. Toastmasters also provides a number of basic and advanced manuals that give you step-by-step information on how to best present your topic. All you have to do is ask. There's always someone available to help.
How often do I have to give a speech?
Your own short- and long-term goals will dictate how often you speak. How quickly do you want to gain certification levels? Do you want to improve your prepared or impromptu speaking? How about learning the use of visual aids? You select your pace and we'll customize the program to help you meet your personal objectives.
What happens if I have to miss a meeting because of another event?
We understand the need to juggle your work and personal life. When you join Toastmasters you will build a great network of individuals who can support you in more ways than preparing a great speech.
What if I have other questions?
Please feel free to discuss Toastmasters with us. Call 972-881-6000 and ask the operator to speak with a member of Toastmasters. One of us will be happy to share our personal experiences and suggestions with you at your convenience. Let's talk!
