History: Mar 1963-Nov 1998 #1-441, Jan 1999-Nov 2003 vol. 2 #1-58, Dec 2003-present #500-p
Summary: Spider-Man's sales were slagging because of the clone saga, so Marvel decided to pull a John Byrne, literally due to his successful relaunch with Superman and do the same to Spider-Man. The Sensational Spider-Man and the long-running Spectacular Spider-Man were cancelled. The Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man (officially becoming Peter Parker: Spider-Man) were relaunched with #1 issues. The two books were also accompanied by the maxi-series, Spider-Man: Chapter One, which retold Spider-Man's origin with some minor changes. The relaunch was not a success and Byrne left the Amazing Spider-Man with #18. J. Michael Straczynski became writer with #30. In 2001, Marvel began its sub-numbering system with a smaller number indicating what issue it would be if the series hadn't been relaunched. So issue #30 was also #471. The vol. 3 numbering continued until #58 in 2003, as the next issue officially returned to original numbering with #500.
