What If?
#47 Oct 1984 and What If...? Vol. 2 #114 Nov 1998

History: Feb 1977-Oct 1984 #1-47 and Jul 1989-Nov 1998 Vol. 2 #1-114 Summary: Marvel's What If series showcased alternate realities of their super-heroes if things went differently. "What If Spider-Man Had Joined the Fantastic Four?", "What If Captain America Had Not Been Revived?" or "What If Phoenix Lived?" were just some of the questions answered in the two runs. The first run lasted 47 issues, with the last issue showing "What If Loki Had Found the Hammer of Thor. In the letters page, a box explains that What If will cease bi-monthly publication. There are some stories on the works but the writers want to make sure they are gems and will take the time to do them right. So a What If #48 and beyond was planned but never printed. Five years later a new monthly What If series returned. In the last issue of Vol. 2, it showcased the descendants of the super-heroes that fought in the Secret Wars. The current Exiles series is a variation of the What If series, with a cast of X-Men from alternate realities banning together. They journey to other dimensions to set the timelines right. Also in late 2004 a fifth week event had What If one-shots published.
