Just like in most of the other FF games, there is Black Magic in FFX. But, the Black Mage in your party is not the only person that can learn Black Magic and does not learn new abilities using items. She (Lulu) will gain new abilities with the Sphere Grid. Other party members can learn magic abilities by going on Lulu's part of the Sphere Grid.
