Traveling can be done a few ways. Of course, you can walk to your destination, although it will take quite a bit of time and things may happen on the trip.

Walking takes one week (real time).

There are also the cute yellow chocobo birds to ride. All you have to do is go to a rental stable in one of the five cities to get one. You can ride them to anywhere you wish and they will find their way back on their own. It takes 3 days to get to a town on a chocobo.

The last way known to all is the airship agency. Airships travel back and forth between the towns, but only between towns. You need an airship pass and a bit more money than renting a chocobo. It takes only a few hours to get to a town by airship.
