We had a quite a nice scenario for last night's game - great weather and a lineup that would have been tough to be beat. It also marked the temporary return to the lineup of former catcher and coach Bob Opitz as well as that of Jo Larson, a key member of our cheering section. Unfortunately, we didn't get a chance to have our team put to the test. Our opponents, the Wizards, were only able to rally seven players and were forced to forfeit the game. We did play a scrimage game against them and, for those who couldn't be there, here's how that went:

The Wizards scored two quick runs in the top of the first. Final Insult was unable to get anything started and we went three-up, three-down. At the end of one, it was 2-0 in favor of the Wizards.

Things changed completely in the second, as we held the Wizards scoreless and racked up some runs of our own. Kathy started us off with a single. Shannon followed with a double (Sadly, Kathy was tagged out on the way to third) and moved over to third when Bob O. singled. Liz singled to bring Shannon home and Rob hit a long single to score Bob O. More consecutive singles by Jeff, Eric and John brought Liz and Rob in. After two, we had taken the lead 4-2.

The Wizards fought back when their chance came in the third inning, scoring two runs to tie the score at 4-4. A single by Sammy and a double from Bob O. put us back on top 5-4.

Nobody could put anything together in the fourth inning (although we did have a single and a double by Jeff and Eric, respectively). We went in to the fifth and final inning still ahead 5-4.

The game turned into a bit of a nail biter when, in the top of the fifth, the Wizards pulled three runs out of their hats. We needed two runs to tie the game and three to pull ahead and win. Shannon led the inning off with a single. Sammy roped a long double that brought in Shannon. Rob hit a single which scored Sammy and was brought home himself (though I can't figure out just how it happened) on a single from Jeff. That was all we needed and we had won a moral victory 8-7 along with the official forfeit win.

Offensive honors for the game go to Jeff (4-4), Sammy (3-3) and Eric, Shannon, and Bob O. (2-3) Special thanks to Melanie for keeping score, to our legion of fan support which included Jo Larson, Amy Walters, John Devaney, and Deval and Nisha Desai. Thanks also to everyone who helped out the Wizards by fielding for them and especially to Bob and Jo for spending time with us.
