We were the visiting team so we got to bat first. Jimmy led off with a single, but he had the only hit in the inning. The other team picked up three quick runs and we were down 3-0.
We did slightly better in the second inning. John got on base with a long triple, then was brought in on a single by Shannon. We allowed only one Twisted run and ended the second inning behind 4-1.
We got one more run in the third when Bob dribbled a single and then was moved around to home plate on a single by Liz and a double by Jimmy. The opposition managed to find some gaps in our defense and took advantage, scoring 5 runs to put us in the hole 9-2.
The fourth inning went quickly, as we generated no offense, while allowing two runs against. The score was now a troubling 11-2.
Our bats final came to life in the fifth. Shannon started us off with a double and scored on a single from Eric. Kathy doubled next, moving Eric to third. A flurry of singles followed, with Zarah singling to score Eric, and Bob and Liz adding singles of their own. Jimmy doubled, clearing the path in front of him and scored himself when Jeff singled. When it was over, we had scored 6 runs to take a large chunk out of their lead. Unfortunately, Twisted gained back almost all of the ground they had lost by scoring 5 runs. At the end of five, we were behind 16-8.
We picked up a few more in the sixth. John led off with a double. Lisa singled to bring him around and moved around the bases herself on consecutive singles by Eric, Kathy, and Zarah. Bob singled to score Eric and we were done for the top half of the inning, having scored three. We held the other guys to only one run and were now down 11-17.
Undaunted, we went into the final inning without letting up. Jimmy led off with a solo home run. Jeff singled next, followed by a double from Rob which moved Jeff to third. John singled, scoring Jeff and moving Rob to third. Lisa singled, bringing Rob in, and then Eric doubled to score John. With the the tying runs on base, we ran out of steam and finished up the game down two runs at 17-15.
This was a hard-fought game, one in which we refused to give up. The fact that 13 of our 15 runs were scored in the last three innings attests to that. Now that our offense is all fired up, and given only a few days inbetween games, I expect that we'll be rarin' to go next time. Offensive honors for the game go to Jimmy (4-4), Bob (3-3), John, Jeff and Eric (3-4), and Zarah and Liz (2-3). Thanks to Melanie for handling the score and to John Devaney for cheering from the bench. After commiserating with some post-game beer, a half-dozen of us headed out for pizza. A great time as always.
