For the first time this season, we played in real "summertime" weather. It was hazy, hot, and humid as a small group of Insult'ers gathered at the HO3 field to take on the 3rd place Translucents. For those of you who couldn't be with us, here's how it went.

The first two innings were uneventful as we were unable to pick up any runs. The Translucents, on the other hand, got 4 and 3 runs in their respective turns at bat.

Our third inning saw us come to life a bit. Three successive doubles by Lisa, Jimmy, and John netted us 2 runs. We gave up 3, leaving us trailing 10-2.

Liz led off with a single in the top of the fourth, and went to second when Zarah singled. Bob singled, scoring Liz and moving Zarah to second. A couple of force-outs later, we were done, despite having seen Lisa and Jimmy reach first. Our opponents scored 4 more, and we were behind 14-3.

Innings 5 and 6 were quick ones for us offensively, as we went three-up, three-down. They were also fast defensively - we held Translucents to one run per inning, bringing the score to 16-3. The fifth inning saw a nice double-play when a fly-out to Jimmy in center and a quick throw to John W. covering second caught a Translucent off the bag.

Looking to try and make a comeback (or at least score a few more runs to make it interesting) in the seventh, we sent our cleanup batter (Jimmy) to the plate. He singled and headed for second when John A. hit a single as well. Kathy sacrificed herself to move the runners up a base. John W. ripped his own single to score Jimmy and get John to third. Liz was up next and she singled too, getting John W. to second. The defense had held John A. on third and we now had bases loaded with one out. Unfortunately, things went downhill from there and a couple of fly-outs ended the game.

The Translucents were a team of mostly young, hard hitting guys who looked like they'd have been equally at home in the C-League. Given that and our understaffed (8) lineup, I think we did well for ourselves. And, as I was reminded, playing and losing is better than not playing at all. Pitching duties were handled by Kathy and offensive honors go to Lisa, Jimmy, and John who were all 3-4. Thanks to Melanie for keeping score and to Lisa's son Shane for cheering us on. A great time as always.
