We were the home team, so we took the field first. Things went well defensively, as we held them to just one run. Jimmy started our offense rolling with a single to left and headed to second base on a single from Rob. Tony doubled, driving in Jimmy. A two-RBI single from Jay brought home Rob and Tony. John A. singled and came around to score on singles from Caroline and Rick. That gave us a three-run lead at 4-1.
Our defense blanked the Titans in the top half of the second. Jimmy was our first base-runner again, having reached base safely with a double. He raced home to score on a single to center by Rob. Rob came home on a single by Tony and a double from Jay. We were now ahead 6-1.
The Titans squeaked one more run in in the third. Starting us off was Caroline, who singled to center field. Rick doubled to left, bumping Caroline to third. Kathy then singled, scoring Caroline and putting Rick on third. Steve singled to score Rick and then Sammy singled to bring in Kathy. Jimmy blasted a home run to left for two more RBIs before the inning ended. At the end of three, we were up 12-2.
We gave up three runs in the fourth, but were determined to get them back. Our half-inning began with consecutive singles by Rick, Kathy, and Liz which loaded the bases. Steve had an RBI single that brought in Rick, then Sammy hit into a sacrifice play that scored Kathy. Another double from Jimmy brought Liz and Steve home. Rob hit a long single to right to score Jimmy. Our lead had now increased to 12, with the score 17-5.
Neither team could produce any offense in the 5th, so we continued into the 6th with the score remaining at 17-5.
Three more runs were gained by the Titans in the top of the 6th. Once again we were able to counter them and then some. Steve singled, but was forced out at second after a play that left Sammy safe on first. Jimmy singled, and then Rob singled to score Sammy. Tony doubled through the gap in center for two RBIs (Jimmy and Rob) and was then sacrificed home by Jay. With but one inning to go, we were ahead 21-8.
The Titans must have just thrown in the towel, because there was just nothing doing offensively for them in the top half of the 7th. Our last ups were not needed and the game ended with a final score of 21-8.
John A. pitched a great game with Caroline and Sammy working behind the plate. Offensive honors go to Jimmy, Tony (5-5) Rob, Jay (4-5) Rick (4-4) and Kathy and Steve (3-4). Thanks to Zarah for keeping score (great job!) and to our legion of fans: Jennifer, John D., Jason, Debbie, and Paul.
After the game, our largest dinner crowd yet (11) headed to Palumbo's to recharge. A great time as always!
