The Sliders were up first and with a little effort got one run in. Jimmy led of for us with a triple. Jay, who isn't our cleanup batter for nothin', brought him in with a home run to right field. That wrapped things up for us, but we had taken the lead 2-1.
There was nothing doing for the Sliders in the top of the second. Tony was our lead-off batter and got himself on with a single. Marc singled too and we had runners on first and second for Kathy. Kathy hit a ground ball that forced Marc out at second, but Tony and Kathy were now safe on the corners. Next up was Dan, who singled to score Tony. Kathy came home when Jimmy doubled to right center and then we were retired. However, we'd picked up two more runs and were ahead 4-1.
The third inning was another empty one for our opponents, as some great plays in the field stymied them. Rick got things moving for us with a single. Tony doubled, putting runners on second and third for Marc. Marc did not disappoint, and picked up two RBIs with a single to left. Unfortunately, a fielder's choice got him for the third out and we went back into the field leading 6-1.
The Sliders attempted a rally in the top of the fourth, but it was ended almost as quickly as it began with only two runs scoring. We decided to take a break from all the base running we'd been doing and left the two runs unanswered. The score was now 6-3.
It was back to the same old grind for the visiting team in the fifth, as our defense held tight and prevented any batters from crossing home plate. Our batters, on the other hand, took steps to take the game out of reach. Pete led off with a deep solo home run to center field. John was up next and singled, and we loaded the bases on two more singles by Jay and Rick. The bags were promptly cleared on a big double from Tony. Marc moved Tony over to third with a single. Another single from Kathy scored Tony, giving us 5 more runs before we ran out of juice. At the end of five, we were ahead of the Sliders 11-3.
Some more fine fielding choked off the Sliders in the sixth. A double by John, a triple by Jimmy and singles by Rick and Tony netted us two more runs in the bottom of the 6th. We left the Sliders with quite a ways to go, as they trailed us now 13-3.
That ended up being the final score, as they once again could not thwart our impenetrable defense. We managed to hold them scoreless in 5 of 7 innings! What a game! Pitching duties were handled by John, who had only one "intentional" walk. Bob took care of things behind the plate. Offensive honors for this game go to Tony (4-4), Jimmy, John, Rick (3-4), and Marc and Kathy (3-3)
The team is now 3-1, and hovering near first place!
