Yesterday's weather was sunny and warm - perfect for a softball game! After a small group of us congregated for our "tree ceremony", we headed down to the field to face Flying Pigs. For those of you who couldn't be with us, here's how it went:

We were the visiting team, so we got to bat first. Sharon got our offense moving with a single. Rob and Shannon followed her lead with singles of their own, but weren't able to capitalize on the opportunity and left them stranded. Defensively, we held tight and kept any little piggies from making it all the way home and we went into the second inning with the score at 0-0.

Inning two ended quickly for us on offense, as we only sent three batters to the plate. We then found ourselves in a bit of a hole when Flying Pigs brought two runs in. As we started the 3rd, we now trailed 0-2.

Something lit a fire us this inning, as we came storming back! Bob led off the inning with a single. Jimmy doubled, followed by singles from Sharon, Rob, and Mike. Shannon then tripled, and Zarah singled, bringing him home. By the time the dust had settled, we had scored 6 runs. Our defense was tight once again and we now led the game 6-2.

Inning four saw us add another run to our total. Liz started us off with a double. Bob singled, moving her to third and Jimmy brought her in with a single of his own. It was another great inning for us defensively as we kept them from chipping away at our lead. We headed into the 5th with the score at 7-2.

Rob was our lead-off batter and he got us going with a single. Eric then singled, moving Rob to second. Zarah followed with a single that, along with some aggressive baserunning, scored Rob and brought Eric to third. A double by John W. brought Eric in. That was all we were able to manage, but we added two more runs to our lead. And after another defensive shut-out we eased into the 6th leading 9-2.

There the score would stay for the rest of the game, as innings 6 and 7 were uneventful offensively. On a defensive note, it is worth mentioning that the 6th inning saw Jimmy make 3 unassisted put-outs, which helped bring him to a total of 8 for the night!

This was just a great game, as we came back from a deficit, took the lead and never let go. Our defense was really firing on all cylinders and offensively, a tip of the hat to Rob (3 for 4) and to Zarah and Bob (2 for 3). Kathy pitched a great game with Bob catching. A special thanks once again to Melanie, who has settled nicely into the scorekeeping role. After the game it was off to Palumbo's (for a few of us, anyway) for pizza and beer. A great time as always.
