We had a great turnout (and great weather) for our game against the NVA Nads from the D- league. For those of you who couldn't be with us, here's how it went:

We were the visiting team and got to bat first. Jimmy was our leadoff batter and got us moving with a single. He was bumped up to second base on a single from Tim. Pete found a hole in the outfield and dropped one in for a triple, scoring two runs. A single from Ali brought Pete in. Caroline advanced him to second on a ground ball. Rich singled, moving Ali to third. John D. was up next and reached first safely, with Ali scoring and Rich being forced at second. Singles from Kathy and John A. brought John D. in to score. The Nads answered back (as best they could) with two runs of their own. At the end of the inning, we led 5-2.

The second inning was even better. Dan and Jimmy both singled, and Tim drove them in with a long home run ball. Pete, Ali, and Caroline singled to load the bases and then Rich singled to bring in Pete and Ali, moving Caroline to third. John D. was up next and hit a ground ball that brought Caroline home. When we were through we had added six more runs to our total. Defensively, we blanked the Nads and moved into the third inning ahead 11-2.

The third inning saw a couple of hits (singles from John A. and Liz, double by Bob) that unfortunately produced no runs. On the positive side, our defense held tight and allowed none. Still 11-2.

Jimmy led off the top of the fourth with a double and scored when Pete singled. That one run was all we managed before the third out. We allowed the Nads to gain that ground back and kept our lead intact at 12-3.

Despite a couple of singles by Rich and John D. to start off our fifth inning, we were held scoreless. The NVA Nads picked up one more run and we finished up the the fifth leading 12-8.

No offensive excitement for us in the sixth, but we did see a rare double play in the bottom half of the inning. A fly ball to center field was nabbed by Jimmy, who noticed a runner on second base straying a bit too far from the bag. A hard pickoff throw to second taught the runner a valuable lesson in tagging up. At the end of six, the score held at 12-8.

It was three-up, three-down for us in the seventh and the Nads were feeling the pinch (ouch!). I guess they decided to go for broke and an overly aggressive runner found himself caught in a run-down between third and home. Ali and Pete executed the play perfectly and prevented the score. Deflated, the Nads wound down the inning without further difficulty and gave us a 12-4 win.

Offensive honors for the game to Pete, Rich, John D. (3-3) Jimmy (3-4), and Ali and John (2-3). Pitching duties were handled expertly by John A. with flawless relief from Caroline. Bob and Pete handled the catching chores. Thanks to Melanie for keeping score and to Tyler, who returned to cheer us on from the sidelines.
