We were the home team and took to the field in the top of the 1st. The Nads' batters had obviously been practicing, as they brought three runs in before we shut them down. Jimmy led off for us with a double. John dropped a single in and moved Jimmy over to third. Then Pete poked a double to score both Jimmy and John. Our next three batters went down in order, leaving Pete languising at second, but we had cut the lead to just 1 run, and were behind 3-2.
NVA Nads squeaked one run in during the top of the second inning and then we were back up again. Unfortunately, all we managed offensively was a single by Dan before getting put down. We now trailed 4-2.
The third inning saw us hold the Nads scoreless and our bats come alive! Our first two batters, Liz and Bob, singled. Then Jimmy launched a deep ball to the outfield for a home run. John and Pete each singled, and were brought home on a double by Jay. Tony then singled which scored Jay from second. Lisa doubled, moving Tony over to third, and the two of them scored on a single by Sammy. That ended our rally and at the end of three we now led 10-4.
The fourth inning was much like the third. We kept our opponents from chipping away at our lead and added some more runs to it. Bob started the offense with a triple (what base coach?) and was, thankfully, able to jog home when Jimmy hit his second home run of the game. John continued the hitting display with a single and was forced home when Pete tripled. Jay singled, bringing Pete in and then Tony tripled (3rd triple of the inning!) to get Jay in. Things died out for us at this point, but we had tacked on 5 more runs. The score was now 15-4.
Inning five was a bust for both teams, as neither side could drum any offfense. Still 15-4.
The Nads still had nothing going for them in the 6th, while we continued to outdistance them. Jimmy started the inning with a double, and moved to third on a ground ball from John. Pete brought him in with a sacrifice fly. Jay doubled and came in to score when Tony doubled. Lisa was up next and singled, which drove in Tony. That wrapped up our at-bat, and we were now up 18-4.
It finally happened in the top of the 7th - we had our trademark "bad inning". Batter after batter found chinks in our armor and one run after another crossed the plate. Fortunately, we had built up a more than comfortable lead. After giving the Nads some false hope, we shut them down after they had picked up seven runs. The final score was 18-11.
Pitching duties were handled admirably by John with Lisa and Bob putting in time behind the plate. Offensive honors go to Jimmy (4-4), John, Pete, Jay, Tony, and Lisa (3-4) and Sammy and Bob (2-3). Thanks to Melanie for keeping score and to Shane for cheering us on from the bench.
After the game, a small gathering headed to Palumbo's for pizza and beer. A great time as always!
