The team was back in action Wednesday night as we took on "Those Guys" on the unusually dry HO1 field. For those of you who couldn't be with us, here's how it went:

Those Guys were the visiting team and got to bat first. They wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard, as they racked up 4 runs in the top of the first. Jimmy singled to lead our comeback attempt. Pete doubled down the middle to score him, and then scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Caroline. Our next two batters also tested the left fielder, only to find him all to competent. At the end of one, we trailed 4-2.

Tight defense held the "Guys" scoreless in the second. We picked up one more run on a double to right center by Tony, a ground ball from Sammy that moved Tony to third, and then a single by Marc that brought him in. Now we were down only one, at 4-3.

We gave up one more run in the third, and went three-up, three-down when it was our turn to bat. We now were behind 5-3.

The fourth was another empty inning for Those Guys, while we were able to get our offense fired up. Jimmy led off with a single. He chugged to third on a seeing-eye single through the middle from Pete. Caroline was up next and hit her second sacrifice fly of the game, bringing Jimmy home and moving Pete to second. Jay hit a long double to between center and right to bring in Pete. Then John A. doubled to bring Jay around. Tony singled scoring John, followed by a single from Sammy, but we left those two hanging and wrapped up the inning. But we had taken the lead at 7-5.

It was not to last however, as Those Guys picked up 5 runs in the top of the fifth. We were too stunned to answer back, and went down almost in order, but for an intervening single from Liz. The score was now 10-7.

Our defense blanked their batters again in the sixth, while we nibbled at their lead. Jimmy doubled to right field, and headed to third on a single from Caroline. Jay knocked in Jimmy with another single. That was all we had in us, but we had cut the lead down to two. Heading into the final inning, we were down 10-8.

And then it happened: the bad inning. The hits just kept on coming as "Guy" after "Guy" got on base and scored. By the time we stopped the bleeding, they had picked up 7 more runs. Undaunted (well, perhaps just a little daunted), we tried to stage a retaliatory strike. John A. started us off right with a double to center. Tony knocked him in with a single to left center. Sammy singled and now we had runners on first and second with one out. Unfortunately, our next two outs came in quick succession and the game was over.

Still in all, this was a fun game and a great night to play. And we had the highest attendance of any game yet this season, seeing our lineup swell to 14 at one point! Pitching duties were handled by John with Caroline and Bob alternating behind the plate (it was pointed out that most of Those Guys' runs came while Bob was behind the plate. Hmmm....) Offensive honors for the game go to Jimmy and Tony (3-3), and Pete, Jay, and John, (2-3)

After the game, several devout pizza lovers headed to Palumbo's for some chow. A great time as always.
