We were the home team and took the field first. I guess we didn't put enough warm-up time in before the game, because we had our "bad inning" right out of the box. The Chicks scored 5 quick runs to put us in the hole. We tried to mount a comeback, with Caroline reaching first on a walk. Pete doubled to bring her to third and John A. brought her home with an RBI single. A couple of pop-ups (the first of many this game) dashed our hopes and we went into the second inning behind 5-1.
The Chicks did more "screaming" in the top of the second as four more of their batters scored. Consecutive singles by Dan, Kathy, Liz, and Bob netted us just one more run and we fell further behind at 9-2.
Two more runs came in for the Screaming Chicks in the third, and we were unable to mount any offense of our own. The score was now 11-2.
This game was a bit strange in that after the third inning, the score never changed. Neither team was able to bring any more batters home. We threatened to score in the sixth with singles by Rich, John A., Zarah and Marc, but a force out and a couple of fly balls ended that rally. We had the bags loaded in the seventh on singles by Liz, Bob, and Jimmy and were again undone by pop-ups. I'd blame it on the opposing pitcher's style, if we hadn't already battled these guys to an 11-11 tie earlier in the season. Oh, well, there's always next year!
After the game, the team indulged in some good-natured ribbing over a beer and resolved to keep the ball down next game. A small group of regulars then moseyed over to Palumbo's for pizza and air-conditioning. A great time as always.
