If the exchange rate is 5,400 Rp to the dollar ( or there-a-bouts ) - - - Example 1 : A beach massage is offered at Rp75,000 which you can see is $13.89 (add the 50,000 and 25,000 together). You know that this is too much and offer Rp10,000 ($1.86). Laughter follows, and eventually the price gets down to Rp25,000. That is the equivalent of A$4.63 - or 4.64 of your currency - and you know that this is a GOOD price. (But the massage may not be all that good!) Example 2 : A 3 piece double breasted suit, tailored to measure from Italian material with 2 pairs of trousers is eventually negotiated from Rp1 million down to Rp 600,000. That is A$111.11. ($18.52 + $92.59) and you know that's a good price. These two examples also highlight the differences you might find when bargaining for goods and for services. When bargaining for goods the best price that you can get is the best price (unless the goods are swapped for lesser quality as they are wrapped up for you) whereas when bargaining for services (such as a massage) the service can deteriorate as you get to lower prices. I recall a massage on Nusa Dua beach, bargained down from the usual Rp35,000 to Rp20,000. The massage was later described as 'feather light' and lasted only 15 minutes. It was cheap but not good value. Print off about 2 copies of the strip(s) which show roughly the right exchange range for each week that you'll be away. Humidity, perspiration and handling destroy the paper after a few days. Cut out the strips and fold them each 5 times zig-zag fashion. Keep them in your purse or bum-bag. Each day check the local exchange rate and re-fold the appropriate strip so that the rate nearest the official one is facing out and easily seen. Alternatively, paste them in groups of 4 into the back pages of a Spirax #541 Note Pad or similar. Use the pad to record costs of items for friends, or just for memories sake. Have a great holiday. |
