Episode 2.5
"Cast Down"
Written by Joseph D. Blackerby
INT. CAVE ENTRANCE - NIGHT
Big lights attached to a generator shine brightly down on the
entrance to the cave. Two Police Officers, MANNY and PORTER
are busy carrying evidence out of Frost's hideout.
MANNY
How'd we get stuck with this crap
detail?
PORTER
Benefits of workin' the night
shift.
MANNY
But that's the benefit of workin'
the night shift. Nothin's supposed
to happen.
PORTER
Win some, lose some.
MANNY
What is all this junk, anyway?
He sorts through what they've collected. Assorted odd pieces
of junk from the last century. Manny looks it over, shakes
his head and sighs. Then something catches his eye. A
photograph. Something is strange about it. It's an old
black and white photo that looks to be from the early 1900's.
A group of people dressed in older clothing, posing by a
rustic looking cabin surrounded by a forest and creek. He
picks up the photo, looks at it closer.
MANNY
I'll be damned. Hey Porter, look
at this.
Porter walks over, looks over Manny's shoulder.
MANNY
See anything familiar?
Porter looks over the picture and his eyes go wide in
surprise.
PORTER
I'll be...that's Reverend Cleaver.
Sure enough, smiling in the background is Cleaver.
INT. HOSPITAL ROOM - DAY
Agent BEN FOWLER (Edward Burns) is finishing getting dressed
back into his suit. His hands are wrapped in gauze and he
has a bandage on his forehead. Sheriff GRETCHEN BANKS (Lake
Bell) walks in with bandages of her own.
BANKS
Checking out?
FOWLER
Doc just released me. You okay?
BANKS
Cuts and bruises. You?
FOWLER
Little bit of hypothermia and a
hell of a headache. Heard anything
from Frost?
BANKS
He hasn't been talking. But a
couple of my deputies found this in
Frost's possessions.
She hands Fowler the photograph that was discovered.
FOWLER
Is this real?
BANKS
Haven't had it authenticated yet,
but it doesn't look altered.
Fowler studies the photograph closer.
FOWLER
Where was this taken?
BANKS
That's the million dollar question,
isn't it?
FOWLER
Let's see if we can get Frost to
give us the answer.
INT. LOBBY - WEEPING WILLOW HOTEL - DAY
JAKE RIVKIN (Jared Padalecki) carries a box up from the
basement and sees FINNEAS GRIMM (Robert Englund) walking
through the main door.
JAKE
Hey Mr. Grimm. Mom's gone on a few
errands. Probably be back in an
hour or so.
GRIMM
Actually, I was looking for you.
JAKE
Me?
GRIMM
I wanted to ask you about the
amulet you had the other day.
JAKE
What about it?
GRIMM
I'm a bit of an antique nut and it
caught my eye. Wanted to find out
a little more about it.
Jake gets the sense that he's being played, but he covers
well.
JAKE
Sure. What do you wanna know?
GRIMM
Where did you come across it?
JAKE
Found it.
GRIMM
Really? Where?
JAKE
Around. Don't really remember.
GRIMM
I see. Mind if I take a look at
it? There was a stone I believe --
I would like to identify it.
Jake reluctantly takes the amulet from his pocket. Slowly
hands it over to Grimm, who takes out a pair of thin glasses
and puts them on. He studies the stone in the center of the
amulet closely.
GRIMM
Magnificent.
JAKE
Can I have it back now?
GRIMM
I'd really like to take some time
with this, if you don't mind.
JAKE
Actually I do. I'd like to have it
back.
GRIMM
Jake, it's really important that I
study this.
JAKE
No, somethin's going on. You know
somethin' you're not telling me.
It has to do with the Reverend,
doesn't it?
Grimm looks surprised at the question.
GRIMM
What do you know about the
Reverend?
EXT. BUTCHER SHOP - DAY
A small shop that's old and worn down. Banks pulls in, parks
the car and gets out. Fowler looks puzzled as he steps out.
FOWLER
Thought we were going to see Frost.
BANKS
We are. Tried to put him in a jail
cell, but he reacted to the heat
inside.
FOWLER
You're kiddin' me.
BANKS
His body is so used to the cold,
that he can't stand any temperature
above sixty degrees. His skin
actually looked burned after
spending an hour in the jail.
FOWLER
Jesus...
BANKS
C'mon, he's inside.
INT. BACK ROOM - BUTCHER SHOP - DAY
Manny and Porter stand guard outside the meat locker, both
looking uneasy.
BANKS
Has he said anything?
PORTER
Nothing useful.
MANNY
He keeps spoutin' off that he can
smell our blood.
PORTER
And that he needs to eat.
FOWLER
You've given him food, right?
MANNY
He won't eat it. Keeps sayin' it's
not what he needs.
FOWLER
Let's go see if he's ready to talk
yet.
Porter opens the meat locker and lets Fowler and Banks
inside.
INT. MEAT LOCKER - BUTCHER SHOP - CONTINUOUS
A wave of foggy, icy air hits Fowler and Banks as they enter
the meat locker.
On the far wall, FROST (Willem Dafoe) sits chained to a
makeshift bench, dressed only in ragged clothes and looking
quite comfortable except for his blue/gray skin. He grins
when he sees Fowler.
FROST
I don't remember ordering take out.
FOWLER
You're just a barrel of laughs.
Banks pulls out the photograph and shows it to Frost.
BANKS
We need to know where you got this
photograph.
FROST
I'm not talkin' until I get
something to eat.
Banks points to a plate of untouched food on the bench.
BANKS
You've been given food.
FROST
That's not what I need. Ask Agent
Fowler -- he knows.
FOWLER
Human flesh. He thinks he'll die
without it.
Frost leaps up, furious, but the chains hold him back.
FROST
IT'S THE HUNGER! I CAN'T STOP THE
HUNGER!
BANKS
Well we both know that's not gonna
happen so you'd better get used to
the idea.
Frost sits back down, calming himself.
FROST
Then I guess we're not talking.
BANKS
Have it your way.
She storms out. Fowler looks to Frost, who smiles.
FROST
Let me know how it works out for
you.
EXT. DESTINY LIBRARY - DAY
Grimm leads Jake up the sidewalk to the front entrance, but
just before they reach it, he turns and walks along the side
of the building.
JAKE
What are we doing here?
GRIMM
You've figured out so much on your
own. I'm just going to help fill in
some of the gaps.
JAKE
I didn't really figure any of it
out. It doesn't take a rocket
scientist to know that something's
not right with Cleaver.
GRIMM
You'd be surprised how faith can
make one blind.
JAKE
The library entrance is back there.
Why are we walking back here?
GRIMM
We're going to the other entrance.
Grimm locates a carefully placed bush and pushes it aside.
To Jake's surprise, there's a locked trap door in the ground.
Grimm fumbles with a set of keys and gets the lock open. He
flings open the door.
GRIMM
Follow me.
INT. TUNNEL UNDER LIBRARY - MOMENTS LATER
Grimm has a glowing lantern in his hand and he leads Jake
down a narrow tunnel. They reach a heavy iron door and Grimm
pushes it open with some effort. He and Jake enter the room
beyond.
INT. ARCHIVE CHAMBER - CONTINUOUS
A large square room lined with bookshelves full of hand bound
journals. In the center at a small desk is a man we'll come
to know as the HISTORIAN(Alan Rickman) writing in a journal
by soft lamp light. He looks up at Grimm.
HISTORIAN
To what do I owe the pleasure?
GRIMM
I got somebody I want you to meet.
HISTORIAN
Strange. You're usually content to
let me rot down here.
GRIMM
You're no prisoner. You can leave
whenever you want.
JAKE
You never leave this room?
HISTORIAN
My life is work, work work all the
time. Don't want to fall behind.
And you are...
GRIMM
My apologies. This is Jake Rivkin.
HISTORIAN
Ah, Paul and Bonnie's son. I just
finished writing the tale of your
father's untimely death. My
condolences.
JAKE
Who are you?
HISTORIAN
My true name could compromise a
great many things. Most call me
the Historian.
(off Jake's look)
Silly, I know, but in these times
such precautions are necessary.
Jake looks at the shelves and shelves of journals.
JAKE
What is all this?
HISTORIAN
The history of Destiny.
JAKE
Starting from when?
HISTORIAN
From the very beginning.
Jake walks the shelves, looking in wonder at all the books.
JAKE
I don't understand.
HISTORIAN
In time, you will. You are part of
something much larger than you
think.
INT. BLUE EYE DINER - DAY
PENNY ROSE (Sherilyn Fenn) moves from table to table, taking
orders from the sparse customers scattered around the diner.
The main door opens and a shadowy FIGURE walks inside,
unseen. Penny notices it out of the corner of her eye, but
ignores it for the time being.
CLOSE ON A PAIR OF DUSTY BOOTS
Walking along the floor, heavy and methodical. A chair at a
table scoots back and the figure sits down.
BACK TO SCENE
As Penny makes her way over to the table. Without really
looking at the figure, she prepares to take the order.
PENNY
Breakfast just ended, so we're on
the lunch menu. What'll it be?
FIGURE
Just some information.
Penny now looks at her customer. A sturdily built man
wearing a black duster jacket. We will know him only as SETH
(Dominic Purcell).
SETH
Where can I find Jake Rivkin?
PENNY
You got business with him?
SETH
It's a private matter.
PENNY
Ain't nothin' private in this town.
You must not be from around here.
SETH
It's been a while since I've
visited.
PENNY
I'm sorry, but I can't help ya.
Not really sure where he's at.
SETH
Thank you anyway.
He reaches out his hand and she reluctantly shakes it.
Immediately her hand begins smoking, as if a fire burns
between their hands. Seth stands and looks into her eyes.
She now sees they're as black as night.
SETH
I only know one kind of person
where my touch can do that. I'll
be seeing you.
He lets go of her hand and walks out. Trembling, Penny looks
at her hand. It's red from Seth's touch. Penny looks scared
and worried.
INT. MEAT LOCKER - BUTCHER SHOP - DAY
Frost sits on the bench, staring into the wall. His
breathing intensifies and he looks at his chained hand
lustfully. He brings it up to his mouth and with slow
pleasure, BITES down into his ring and pinkie fingers. Blood
flows as his teeth tear away the flesh like from a drumstick.
Frost's face floods in ecstasy as he swallows the meat. With
his two fingers gone, he's able to slide his hand out of the
chains. He looks to his other hand.
FROST
And now for seconds...
EXT. DESTINY CHURCH - DAY
Fowler knocks on the side door of the church and waits
impatiently. He peers inside the window, while Banks
watches.
FOWLER
I don't get it. Why pick up and
go?
BANKS
How long's it been?
FOWLER
A few weeks. No one's seen a
trace.
Banks walks alongside the church, occasionally glancing in
the windows. As she passes an oak tree, something catches
her eye. She looks at the tree, frowns and pulls out the
photograph.
BANKS
Fowler, you'd better take a look at
this.
Fowler walks over and Banks shows him the photograph.
FOWLER
What am I looking for?
BANKS
The tree. Look at the tree.
Fowler studies the picture and notices how the tree forks in
two different directions. Then he looks back at the tree.
FOWLER
It's the same one. So the cabin --
BANKS
Was standing where the church is
now.
FOWLER
There's gotta be some explanation
about the picture. No way is
Cleaver over a hundred years old.
BANKS
Either that or he's got one helluva
plastic surgeon.
INT. ARCHIVE CHAMBER - DAY
Jake follows the Historian around the archive as they look
over the many books on the shelves.
HISTORIAN
How much do you know about Destiny?
JAKE
I dunno. I've lived here all my
life. In my history class they
said it was...founded by a preacher
or something.
HISTORIAN
That's the wonderful thing about
history books. Just because it
says 'history' it's regarded as the
truth.
JAKE
So it's not true?
HISTORIAN
There's an element of truth in all
of history. It's up to us to
decipher which part is the truth.
It is true that one Samuel
Bartlett, a preacher lived in
Destiny. But he didn't found it.
It was already here. It's always
been here.
JAKE
I don't get it.
HISTORIAN
Think of it as an intersection.
For some reason, a reason that is
still unknown to us, people are
drawn to this place. It's like a
magnet that attracts only certain
people. And not just anyone. Very
specific people.
JAKE
You're saying the town
is...choosing people?
HISTORIAN
Not exactly, but that's probably a
good way to think about it.
As long as there has been recorded
history here, there has always been
conflict. Two sides, fighting it
out, using Destiny as the
battleground. And something very
big is developing.
(finds a book on the
shelf)
Ah, here we are.
He thumbs through the book until he finds what he's looking
for.
HISTORIAN
This is from the journal of Patrick
Thurman, a historian from the early
1900's.
(reads)
An amulet was found just outside a
cave entrance deep in the forest.
It has an elaborate outer casing of
pure gold with a fiery red ruby in
the center. We do not know it's
purpose, but there are those in the
town that will now stop at nothing
to get it.
He closes the book and faces Jake.
HISTORIAN
He was murdered three days later.
All traces of the amulet are gone
from then on. Until you showed up
with it. And I understand from
Grimm that you discovered it in the
Reverend's quarters?
JAKE
Yes. In a lockbox.
HISTORIAN
And do you know where the Reverend
is now?
JAKE
No. Hasn't been seen in weeks.
HISTORIAN
Interesting...
(to Grimm)
We must find out what game we have
just become a part of.
JAKE
Game?
HISTORIAN
Cleaver would not have let
something like this amulet be found
so easily. We have to understand
why he wanted it found.
EXT. DESTINY CHURCH - DAY
Fowler and Banks head back to the car when Banks' cell phone
rings. She answers as she unlocks the car door.
BANKS
Banks.
(listens)
Are you sure? Okay, we'll be right
over.
She hangs up, looks excited.
BANKS
Seems that Frost is ready to talk.
Let's get over there.
Suddenly Fowler's phone rings. Annoyed he answers it.
FOWLER
Fowler here.
INT. BLUE EYE DINER - CONTINUOUS
Penny is on the pay phone inside the diner.
PENNY
Ben? It's Penny.
INTERCUT WITH FOWLER
FOWLER
(into phone)
What's goin' on?
PENNY
Somethin's not right. Some big guy
came in here a little while ago
askin' about Jake. I didn't tell
him, but it won't take him long to
figure it out. He scared me.
FOWLER
Okay, I'll go over and check on
him. Call you later.
He hangs up, looks at Banks like "Sorry".
FOWLER
I'll meet you over at the shop in a
bit. Gotta check over at the
Weeping Willow.
BANKS
Is everything all right?
FOWLER
I'm sure it's nothing.
INT. LOBBY - WEEPING WILLOW HOTEL - DAY
Seth walks into the lobby calmly, scanning the area. BONNIE
RIVKIN (Elizabeth Pena) walks out from the back office to the
front desk. She's instantly unnerved by him.
BONNIE
Can I help you?
SETH
I'm looking for Jake.
BONNIE
Jake who?
SETH
That's funny Bonnie.
BONNIE
How do you know me?
SETH
Oh, I know a lot about you. Let's
have a chat.
He smiles, but it's not a pleasant one by any means.
INT. MEAT LOCKER - BUTCHER SHOP - DAY
Banks enters the meat locker where Frost is waiting for her.
BANKS
I was told you wanted to see me?
FROST
Indeed I did. In fact, I wanted to
invite you for dinner.
Only now does Banks see the blood on the bench. She goes for
her gun -- but Frost leaps to his feet, completely free of
his chains. He knocks Banks to the ground and crouches on
top of her. Her gun slides across the floor, out of reach.
Banks struggles and is able to push Frost back. She
scrambles to her feet and the two square off. Banks attacks,
punching Frost hard, but he doesn't seem to react. He jumps
back, uses the bench as a springboard and leaps towards her.
Banks grabs him at the last minute, flips him up and he sails
through the air. Suddenly he stops -- suspended in mid-air,
upside down. Banks looks at him in shock. Then blood drips
down his torso. Frost has landed on a meat hook and it has
buried itself deeply into his back. Frost feels the tip of
it protruding from his chest. He takes his last breath and
dies.
Manny and Porter burst in, too little, too late. Banks looks
at them, annoyed.
BANKS
Good timing.
INT. LOBBY - WEEPING WILLOW HOTEL - NIGHT
Fowler strolls into the lobby, stops by the front desk only
to find it empty.
FOWLER
Hello? Bonnie? Jake? Anyone
here?
He can faintly hear a muffled voice. He turns the corner to
find -- Bonnie, strapped to a chair with a thin wire that's
cutting into her skin. A gag is stuffed into mouth.
FOWLER
Bonnie!
He moves to untie her when her eyes signal him that --
Too late. Seth moves in, quickly disarms Fowler and throws
him across the room. It sends Fowler through a wall, where
he crumples into a heap. Seth sits down in front of Bonnie
and smiles.
SETH
Now let's talk about that amulet.
