INT. DESTINY PUBLIC LIBRARY - NIGHT

Dark and spooky with floor to ceiling shelves of books. SAM
GUTHRIE, elderly, but still spry wheels a cart between them,
returning books to their rightful places.

A SCRATCHING noise brings his cart to a stop. He listens,
               but doesn't hear anything more.

                                   SAM
                         Damn rats...

He continues to return books until a SHADOW passes by behind
him. Now he begins to feel uneasy. FOOTSTEPS echo somewhere
               in the near distance.

                                   SAM
                         Hello?

He pushes his cart with more purpose, no longer putting books
back. The FOOTSTEPS quicken in pace -- pursuing him.

Sam abandons the cart and hurries as quickly as his legs will
take him towards a small office in the rear.

Just as he turns a corner the dark SHADOW whips out in front
of him -- the identity shrouded in a flowing black cloak.
Its voice is disembodied and raspy.

                                   SHADOW
                         You are one of them.

Sam backs up -- shaking in fear.

                                   SAM
Wha -- what are you talking about?

An invisible force hurls him violently into a shelf. As
books fall down, he remains suspended in the air.

The Shadow does a small wave and Sam watches in horror as his
own mouth is forced open -- to the point of hearing his jaw
               separate.

                                   SHADOW
The truth -- will set you free.

Sam SCREAMS as everything goes BLACK.

INT. BLUE EYE CAFE - DAY

FOWLER (Edward Burns) squints at the morning sun shining
through the window. PENNY (Sherilyn Fenn) closes the blinds
as she brings him a cup of coffee.

                                   FOWLER
Now how did you know I wanted
                         coffee?

                                   PENNY
I'm psychic. What can I getcha
                         'hun?

                                   FOWLER
                         Just some toast this morning.
                         Lotsa butter.

                                   PENNY
You know we were in the middle of
talkin' about something a few weeks
ago and never got to finish.

                                   FOWLER
                         Refresh my memory.

                                   PENNY
We were thinkin' that we need to
get to know each other better.

                                   FOWLER
And how do you want to arrange
                         that?

                                   PENNY
Just hang on to that cup. You'll
figure it out. Be right back with
                         your toast.

Fowler watches her head back to the kitchen -- she puts a
little extra wiggle in her step. He lifts up the coffee mug
and finds a piece of paper with a phone number written on it.

                                   FOWLER
                         Lord, have mercy.

His cell phone RINGS. He lets out a loud sigh as he answers.

                                   FOWLER
                         Fowler.
                             (beat)
                         I'll be right there.

He stands as Penny comes out with the toast.

                                   FOWLER
                         Better make that to go.

He takes one last gulp of coffee.

                                   PENNY
You can bring that mug back later.

                                   FOWLER
                         Already got what I needed.

As he heads out the door, Penny looks under the mug and sees
that her phone number is gone. She smiles and clears the
               table.

EXT. DESTINY PUBLIC LIBRARY - DAY

Fowler arrives and gets out of his car. He's met by BANKS
(Lake Bell) and she ushers him past the crime scene tape.

                                   BANKS
                         This one's just plain strange.

                                   FOWLER
Did Dr. Seuss choke on his Green
                         Eggs and Ham?

                                   BANKS
You don't know how close you are.

               They both enter.

INT. DESTINY PUBLIC LIBRARY - DAY

Fowler follows Banks to far corner. When they round the
corner, Fowler takes a bite of toast but reels in disgust and
spits it out when he sees what's in front of him.

Sam's body is tied to the shelf. His mouth is gaping wide
open with wadded pages stuffed into it. Blood trickles down
               his chest.

                                   FOWLER
                         Geez, you coulda warned me!

He throws away what's left of his toast and catches Banks
               with a wry, satisfied smile.

                                   BANKS
Vic's name is Sam Guthrie. He's
been the head librarian for over
                         forty-five years.

                                   FOWLER
He looks like my grandfather. Who
could have had a grudge that bad
against him to do something like
                         this?

                                   BANKS
Whoever did it thought they were
sending a message, but I have no
                         clue what it is.

                                   FOWLER
Well it sure isn't a promo for
                         literacy.
                             (inspects the mouth)
What does he have in there?

He uses tweezers to remove a page from Sam's mouth. Using
rubber gloves, he carefully straightens the page out.

                                   FOWLER
It's a page from the Bible. How
many pages do you think are in
                         there?

                                   BANKS
                         I'll hazard a guess.

She holds up a Bible that looks a lot thinner.

                                   BANKS
I'd say the entire Old Testament.

INT. BASEMENT/DARKROOM - WEEPING WILLOW HOTEL - DAY

PAUL (Mandy Patinkin) walks through the quiet halls of the
basement until he comes to Jake's darkroom. As he knocks --

                                   PAUL
                         Jake? Jake, you in there?

When he gets no answer he opens the door. Pictures hang over
several lines drying and they catch his attention.

               They're mostly of him.

As he looks through the maze of photographs it is apparent
that Jake has been following his every move.

One series of photographs stands out. They show Paul and
CLEAVER (Lance Henriksen) talking together and walking down a
set of steps to some kind of underground structure.

Paul looks like a rat trapped in a cage. He backs out of the
               room and shuts the door.

INT. DESTINY PUBLIC LIBRARY - DAY

Fowler walks along the stacks of books curiously, scanning
the titles. Banks comes around the corner, looking for him.

                                   BANKS
Grimm took the body back to the
                         morgue. Should have the autopsy
done later today. I'm heading back
                         to the station.

                                   FOWLER
                         I'll catch up to there.

                                   BANKS
Looking for a book to check out?

                                   FOWLER
Do you realize he's got an entire
                         section devoted to Black Magic?

                                   BANKS
                         So?

                                   FOWLER
So you don't find that a little
                         odd?

                                   BANKS
Maybe a little. My uncle used to
run a library. He had a limited
budget so he used to order stuff
                         people were asking for. Maybe
                         that's your answer.

                                   FOWLER
Given the town, now it makes a
little more sense. All these old
books, but I'll be damned if I can
find a copy of "The DaVinci Code".

                                   BANKS
                             (confused)
                         Huh?

                                   FOWLER
Oh c'mon, you said yourself you're
a big reader. "The DaVinci Code"?
Number one bestseller of all time?
                             (her expression is still
                              blank)
Never mind. I'll see you later.

Banks heads around the corner, puzzled at the exchange.
Fowler mutters under his breath --

                                   FOWLER
Someone needs to seriously turn off
the vacuum Destiny got sucked into.

He sees a book that interests him on the top shelf and
strains to reach for it. He pulls it off -- and gets a face
full of dust. He sputters the dust out of his mouth --

                                   FOWLER
I suppose I should have expected
                         that.

As he wipes the dust from his eyes, he catches a glimpse of
something up on the ceiling. He clicks on his flashlight and
               sees a hi-tech surveillance camera.

He follows the wire from it back along a hallway where it
goes through a wall. Fowler tries the door below it and
               finds it locked.

A quick glance around to make sure no one is watching and
               Fowler kicks it in.

Inside, he finds the camera wire hooked to a laptop and
external hard drive. He looks satisfied at the discovery.

EXT. DESTINY COMMUNITY CHURCH - DAY

Jake walks down the sidewalk, backpack slung over his
shoulder. As he passes by the church, he sees Cleaver
pruning the hedges with a large pair of shears.

                                   CLEAVER
Morning Jake. Nice day, isn't it?

                                   JAKE
Good day to be outside, that's for
                         sure.

Cleaver walks over, still holding the shears.

                                   CLEAVER
                         Can I have a word?

Jake stops -- tries to hide his building nervousness.

                                   JAKE
                         Sure thing.

                                   CLEAVER
I think you might have gotten the
wrong idea about me and your Dad.

                                   JAKE
What are you talking abo --

                                   CLEAVER
I know you've been following us.

There is a moment of strained silence as Jake's face floods
               with guilt.

                                   JAKE
                         There's something going on with
                         him.

                                   CLEAVER
I am helping him work out some
                         problems. That's all.

                                   JAKE
Then why all the secrecy? And
what's with that basement place you
                         guys go?

                                   CLEAVER
                         Privacy. Jake, your father simply
doesn't want anyone to know that
he's coming to me for guidance.
Men find it very hard to ask for
                         help when it's needed.

                                   JAKE
                         What kind of help?

                                   CLEAVER
That's between me, your father and
                         God.
He'll talk to you when he's ready.
I need you to stop tailing us. If
he knew, then it could reverse
                         everything we've been working on.
Can you do that for me?

                                   JAKE
                         I guess.

                                   CLEAVER
                         Good. Thank you. You don't
                         understand everything yet, but in
time, you will. Now get out of
here before I put you to work.

Jake utters a hasty "good-bye" and walks quickly down the
               sidewalk. Cleaver watches every step.

INT. MORGUE - GRIMM FUNERAL HOME - DAY

Banks and GRIMM (Robert Englund) look over the body of Sam on
               the stainless steel gurney.

                                   GRIMM
                         As you've probably guessed, cause
of death was suffocation by the
pages forced into his throat. It
was a slow and agonizing death.

                                   BANKS
Oh my God...how long did it take
                         him to die?

                                   GRIMM
Could have taken hours depending on
how fast the pages were fed to him.
I can honestly say I've never seen
                         anything like this before.

                                   BANKS
Was there any sign of restraint?

                                   GRIMM
                         His wrists didn't show any
bruising, so based on the evidence,
                         I would say no.

                                   BANKS
I find it hard to believe that he
                         just let this happen.

                                   GRIMM
One odd thing I did find was some
hairline fractures to his chest and
                         ribs. Could have happened just
                         before he died.

Banks notices a mark on his arm.

                                   BANKS
                         What's this?

                                   GRIMM
                         Some sort of tattoo. Maybe
something in Hebrew -- it looks
familiar. I'll print out a picture
of it. I'll make one for Agent
Fowler as well -- I thought he was
                         coming?

                                   BANKS
                             (annoyed)
                         Me too.

INT. DESTINY FBI OFFICE - NIGHT

Fowler plays with the computer system he found in the
library, but can't make it work. His face shows frustration.
Penny glides in with a to-go box.

                                   FOWLER
                             (checks his watch)
                         It's late. Busy night?

                                   PENNY
Just closed up. I noticed you've
been hard at it all day and thought
                         you might be hungry.

She sets the box on his desk and he eagerly opens it.

                                   FOWLER
                         You must be psychic.

                                   PENNY
I've already told you I am.

As Fowler digs into his dinner, Penny sits on the edge of his
desk. It's a sexy pose, meant to catch Fowler's attention --
               it works.

                                   PENNY
                         So how's the case going?

                                   FOWLER
                             (looking at her legs)
                         Better.

The bell on the door suddenly rings and Banks walks in. When
she sees Penny on the desk, her face freezes.

                                   BANKS
                         Oh, I'm sorry...I didn't realize.

                                   FOWLER
                         What?
                             (realizes how it looks)
No, Banks, Penny just brought me
                         dinner.

                                   BANKS
                         Well, I gotta go anyway. I'll -
                         uh, catch you tomorrow.

As quickly as she came in, she's gone. Penny looks back to
               Fowler and shrugs.

INT. DARKROOM/BOILER ROOM - WEEPING WILLOW HOTEL - NIGHT

Jake walks inside, glances at all the photographs he's taken
of Paul and Cleaver. Quickly, he pulls them all down and
gathers them into a big pile.

He hurries out of the darkroom and heads straight for the
large furnace. He opens it and tosses the photographs
               inside.

His eyes reflect the flames within the furnace.

INT. DESTINY FBI OFFICE - MORNING

With a big yawn, Fowler enters, but instantly snaps to
attention when he finds Jake inside.

                                   FOWLER
How did you get in here?

                                   JAKE
                         You left your door unlocked.

                                   FOWLER
                         No I didn't.

                                   JAKE
Okay, it's really easy to get
                         inside with a credit card.

                                   FOWLER
Have to check on that. You know I
could arrest you for that. You're
lucky I'm still sleepy and lazy.

                                   JAKE
I noticed this laptop and hard
drive. You need help with it?

                                   FOWLER
                         You understand that computer stuff?

                                   JAKE
                         Of course.

                                   FOWLER
Then be my guest. It's a video
surveillance unit and I can't get
                         it to even boot up.

Within a few taps, Jake has it up.

                                   FOWLER
Okay, you're hired, but you don't
get paid since you just made me
look like an idiot. Now why did
                         you really come here?

                                   JAKE
I need your help. My Dad's into
somethin' and whatever it is, he's
way over his head. He's been
acting funny for a few weeks now.

                                   FOWLER
                         Paul?

                                   JAKE
                         And the Reverend. He's involved
                         too.

                                   FOWLER
Now you got my attention. You want
me to look into it? I gotta warn
you though, if it is something bad,
I may have to arrest your Dad. Be
                         sure it's what you want.

                                   JAKE
                         Better arrested than dead.

                                   FOWLER
                         Okay kid, I'm on it.

                                   JAKE
I'll get on this system. Shouldn't
                         take long.

                                   FOWLER
I'll be back in a bit. My cell is
on those cards right there. Call
                         me if you find anything.

               Fowler heads out the door.

               INT. SHERIFF STATION - DAY

When Fowler walks in, Banks leans back in her chair, arms
               folded.

                                   BANKS
                         Long night?

                                   FOWLER
                         Oh c'mon. Don't start. It wasn't
                         like that.

                                   BANKS
You were supposed to meet me at the
                         morgue.

                                   FOWLER
Yeah, I'm sorry about that. I
found something at the library. A
                         surveillance camera.

                                   BANKS
And when were you planning on
                         telling me this?

Fowler doesn't have an answer and just stares at her.

                                   BANKS
Maybe you were too busy playing
                         tonsil hockey with Penny?

                                   FOWLER
I told you, it wasn't like that.
                         Are you jealous?

                                   BANKS
Get your ego in check. This is
                         business. Personal doesn't enter
into it. You've got to start
                         keeping me in the loop.

                                   FOWLER
What about your little FBI wacko
                         friend? You know, the escaped
mental patient. You keep him in
                         the loop?

                                   BANKS
That was a cheap shot Fowler and I
told you I don't want to talk about
                         that again.

                                   FOWLER
                             (sees her getting angry)
Okay, okay. Low blow. I'll make
sure you know about everything I'm
                         following up.

                                   BANKS
You said something about a camera?

                                   FOWLER
                         Sam Guthrie had a surveillance
                         camera hidden in the library.
                         Jake's looking through the footage
                         now.

                                   BANKS
                         Jake...Jake Rivkin?

                                   FOWLER
He wanted to help and besides, he's
only one I know of good with
                         computers. What about you? Find
                         anything?

                                   BANKS
Not much. Guthrie had a tattoo on
his arm with symbols that I found
                         out were Hebrew. Translated, the
                         symbols mean 'Holy Guardian'.
Given the biblical pages that were
used to kill him, I'd say there's a
                         connection.

Fowler's phone rings and he quietly answers. After a moment
of low talking, he hangs up.

                                   FOWLER
Looks like Jake may have found
something. Want to be kept in the
                         loop and come along?

                                   BANKS
                         Smart ass.

INT. DESTINY FBI OFFICE - MOMENTS LATER

Fowler and Banks hover over Jake who taps away at the
               computer.

                                   FOWLER
                         What'd you find?

                                   JAKE
The angle on the camera didn't
                         capture the murder.

                                   FOWLER
                         Dammit. What did it catch?

                                   JAKE
                         That's what's strange. Look.

He shows Fowler and Banks the footage. It shows a bookshelf
               against the wall.

                                   BANKS
                         That's a pretty tight angle.
                         What's it meant to watch?

                                   JAKE
That's what I wondered too. Now
just before ten on the time code I
                         found something.

                                   FOWLER
That's around the time of the
                         murder.

                                   JAKE
                         Look at this.

He plays the video. All is still until a flowing black
               SHADOW moves by the bookshelf.

                                   FOWLER
                         What the hell was that?

                                   BANKS
I didn't even see any legs.

                                   JAKE
Weird huh? But it gets even
better. I found out why Sam used
                         this camera.

He rewinds it quickly and plays the video.

                                   JAKE
                         Towards the beginning, there's
                         this.

The video shows Sam walking up to the bookshelf. He pulls
back one book and part of the bookshelf swings open!

                                   FOWLER
                         I'll be damned.

                                   JAKE
                         This surveillance system isn't
                         cheap. Whatever he's got down
                         there must be pretty important.

                                   BANKS
Important enough that he may have
                         been murdered for it.

                                   FOWLER
Anyone up for a road trip?

INT. LOBBY - WEEPING WILLOW HOTEL - NIGHT

The lobby is quiet and dark. Only a soft lamp illuminates
Paul and Cleaver sitting in the corner.

                                   PAUL
I was surprised to get your call
                         Reverend.

                                   CLEAVER
                         There were some things that
                         couldn't wait.

                                   PAUL
                         Is anything wrong?

                                   CLEAVER
Paul, in what we do there is a
                         system of checks and balances.
Things that have to be dealt in
                         order to maintain that balance.

                                   PAUL
                         I don't understand.

                                   CLEAVER
                         Lately there have been some
                         incidents that have attracted
                         unwanted attention. Now they must
                         be dealt with.

                                   PAUL
Are you talking about the FBI guy?
Don't worry about him. The truth
is buried so deeply, he'll never
                         find it.

                                   CLEAVER
Are you aware that your son is with
                         him as we speak?

                                   PAUL
Jake? Why is he with him?

                                   CLEAVER
                         That I don't know. But it's gotten
to the point that I feel
                         uncomfortable. In the interest of
our -- goals, I think he may need
                         to die.

                                   PAUL
                         Who, Fowler?

                                   CLEAVER
                         No. Your son.

A look of horror crosses Paul's face.

                                                         FADE TO BLACK.
