Having never seen Comedy Central's parody of American institution COPS, the big screen version of Reno 911! presented itself as a rather amusing prospect in the impressive chuckle-aloud trailer. However the resulting feature simply fails to make any lasting imprint on the memory whatsoever apart from an extraordinarily depressing one. Furthermore, due to the film's lack of enticing relish, an obvious premonition makes it clear that even if one is aware of the television series and the excruciatingly uninteresting characters which debuted in 2003, your experience of the appalling spectacle would not be enhanced. In fact, the overlong 80 minute running time is one of the worst cinematic experiences you will ever encounter. The fictional Reno Sheriff's Department is full of dumb and grossly unfunny characters, dismal subplots and infantile attempts at pitiable jokes.
That brings us on to the wretched plot and why The Rock and Danny DeVito ever involved themselves in such an affair with their welcome cameo roles. The whole premise of a retarded brigade of police taking control of Miami's crime situation is executed in an inevitably unsuccessful manner with failing joke after disgusting set-piece dotted throughout. Granted, DeVito is the producer of the television series, but how can his mature head deem this material even mildly funny? If the filmmakers strive for gross-out slapstick, they still need to guarantee humour. Without this ingredient, like the rest of the film, all we are left with is a dilapidated mess with every audience member wondering how the multiplexes have a cheek to charge for such a disgraceful spoof of police practices.
