Oh, yes, and Anakin is in love with beautiful young politician Padme (Portman), whom he has secretly wed and impregnated.
Some younger viewers may not have seen the first set of Star Wars films, in which case the significance of events (such as the birth of Luke and Leia) are lost. But, the action and drama will nonetheless translate. It isn't essential to have seen all five other Star Wars films to appreciate this one.
How others will see it. There's plenty of action, although some of the suspense is lost since we know which characters survive to the next movie in the double trilogy, which is also the first movie, Star Wars (1977). Fans of the series will enjoy the movie immensely, and will find it satisfactory since the plot neatly completes the missing links between the plots of the first and second trilogies. How does Anakin become Darth Vader? How does the evil emperor emerge? Why are Yoda and Obi-Wan relegated to nomadic life on remote planets? What happens to Luke's mother?
How I felt about it. The only obvious problem is the absence of comic relief, which was plentiful in the initial 1977 to 1983 films. Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford had an endearing quality not matched by the angst-ridden Christensen and his perfunctory mentor, McGregor. McDiarmid's despicable character steals the show, because his greed for power is the most human trait of anyone in the movie.
The droids C-3PO and R2-D2 are present, as always, and R2-D2 does have a few early triumphal moments. But, C-3PO is completely bland. His talkative, polite, whining, flattering, and easily affronted nature is unhappily absent.
Sometimes, the fight scenes are unintentionally silly. Why spar with light sabers, when your 'force' allows you to fly through the air, and toss enormous objects about with a simple thought? One of the chief villains is dispatched with a shot from a phaser, reminiscent of the Raiders of the Lost Ark moment when Indiana Jones uses a handgun to state the impotence of an opponent's martial arts prowess.
But, a good movie is a contribution to human culture, and not fit for thorough savaging. Revenge of the Sith is a credible end (for now) to the Star Wars series, although comic book style sci-fi adventures are certain to again return to the silver screen.
