  Short, sharp and to the point. A very easy read.

• Monaco, J. 2000. How to Read a Film (3rd Edition). Oxford: OUP.
  

• Bordwell, D. & Thompson, K. 1997. Film Art: An Introduction (5th Edition). USA: McGraw-Hill.
  Both of the above books offer a detailed introduction to film production, history and interpretation.

• Cook, P. & Bernink, M. (eds). 1999. The Cinema Book (2nd Edition). London: BFI Publishing.
  A big book! Deals in detail with the history of cinema, genre and theories of interpretation. Tough but rewarding.
