Dirk Bogarde with Ava Gardner in "The Angel Wore Red," 1960.
Dirk Bogarde was a leading British actor during the late 1950's, 60's, and 70's and also a respected author. Some of his most famous films are "The Servant," "Darling," and "Death in Venice"
In many photos, Dirk Bogarde looks like a British version of Desi Arnaz. Yet, Dirk was hardly Latin, but had Dutch roots. Here he stars in "The Angel Wore Red" with Ava Gardner.
Dirk, in probably his most memorable and challenging roles as Von Ashenbach in "Death in Venice," (1971), a composer (loosely based on Gustav Mahler) who travels to Venice in search of inspiration and beauty to fulfill a composers block. Instead, he becomes mysteriously obsessed with a handsome young man, and follows the young man around in Venice, until tragedy hits.
Dirk Bogarde also starred in this this British hit, "Doctor in the House," also starring Margaret Lockwood, Kay Kendall, and Kenneth More.
