akira kurosawa biography
march23, 1910-september 6, 1998
born in tokyo, japan

born as the eighth and youngest child to isama and shima kurosawa, akira's early ambition was to become a painter and he continued to follow that course until he was 26.  it was then when he was hired as an assistant director and in 1943, he directed his film debut, "sugata sanshiro."  kurosawa gained international respect and fame with his release of "rashomon" in 1950.  his's success would start to decline in japan soon into the 1960's because he was critisized as being overly melodramic and too "western."  this would lead to his attempted suicide in 1971 and kurowsawa would only direct six more movies in the next several decades after.  in 1990, he was presented with an honorary award at the academy awards and the d.w. griffith award from the director's guild of america in 1992.  he died in september of 1998.  kurosawa was truely a great figure in cinema with his talent of conveying irony and intrigue with his complex plots and stunning visuals.
