It was Thanksgiving, my friend Bradley and I were house-sitting for our friends in a small town with big wide roads, no traffic, and no hills. I live in San Francisco, a town with potholes, hills, traffic, and crowded roads where you have to pay attention for your life. I had made it my goal over the holiday to learn how to ride with no hands after all these years of being a biker. Pretty much my first day of real trying, I was able to ride for a little bit with no hands, and I felt really cool. After a few more days of practice, I was ready to gather evidence of my new-found skill, and gave my mobile phone with a video camera to Bradley to record me. I want to mention that during the whole time I'm trying to learn, Bradley was showing me how good he was at riding with no hands. He used to be a messenger in SF and NYC and can do it effortlessly, and at one point, he put his arms inside his sweatshirt and then pulled it over his head so he couldn't even see. I asked him if he was trying to show-off, and he said yes, he was trying to woo me. It didn't work. But he got a short video of me with my mobile phone (which is why the quality is so bad), and we had a great time. I'm proud of myself of learning this FINALLY, at the ripe old age of 29, and maybe someday I will also be able to ride with my sweatshirt over my head too! :) Not really, that's too dangerous for an old lady like myself. I love to ride bikes, I have a single speed road bike and a bmx, and don't see myself having a car anytime soon.
