Fiji Hindi

Fiji Hindi is the language spoken by people of Indian origin residing in Fiji. The language is based on the Eastern Hindi and Bihari dialects but contains  a large number of Standard Hindi and Urdu words. It also has numerous words derived from the Fijian and English languages. There are 460,000 (2007 census) people for whom Fiji Hindi is the mother tongue, of whom 310,000 live in Fiji, 48,000 live in Australia, 38,000 live in New Zealand, 31,000 live in the United States, 25,000 live in Canada and 5,000 live in Great Britain. In addition, another 140,000 people in Fiji (mainly in the Western Division) have a working knowledge of the language.
