Salvador Sanchez 5 DVD Career Set

On February 2, 1980, Sanchez finally got a crack at the
world featherweight title against hard-punching Danny "Little Red" Lopez, the
popular WBC featherweight champion. Lopez had a solid reputation as a very good
fighter. He went on to stop Lopez in the 13th round. Sanchez would later give
Lopez a rematch only to stop him again in the 14th.
Sanchez began a string of impressive title defenses that included 3 top 10
ranked featherweights. He was slowly becoming recognized and he finally got his
chance at stardom against Wilfredo Gomez.
Puerto-Rican bomber, WBC junior featherweight champion Wilfredo Gomez was
victimizing every junior featherweight opponent that stood in his way. Gomez had
made a name for himself by knocking out a dozen Mexican fighters and took on the
moniker of the Mexican Killer.
On August 21, 1981, in one of the most highly anticipated featherweight matches
of all-time, Sanchez, 41-1 (31 KOs), faced off against Gomez, 32-0-1 (32 KOs),
in the Battle of the Little Giants. The fight had all the makings of a classic.
Both fighters were considered top pound for pound fighters, they both disliked
each other, Gomez had the reputation for destroying Mexican fighters, and there
existed the rivalry between their respective cultures.
The pre-fight build up was an exciting event in itself. Gomez constantly mocked
Sanchez and vowed to crush and strip him of his title, while Sanchez who was
never one to trash talk, remained calm and collected and said that he'd let his
fists do all the talking for him in the ring.
In their fight, Sanchez dropped Gomez in the first round and went on to punish
Gomez for 7 more rounds before stopping him in the 8th and almost knocking him
out of the ring.
Then came one of his greatest fights when he took on the then unknown Azuma
Nelson from Ghana. In an intense action packed and violent battle, Sanchez was
able to knockdown Nelson with a combination in the 15th round and secure a
victory. Unfortunately, that would be Sanchez's last fight in a ring as he died
during training in a car accident on August 12, 1982 h. He was on 23 and at the
time.
At the time of his death, he had many great match ups awaiting him. Great
fighters like Eusebio Pedroza, Alexis Arguello, and Julio Cesar Chavez lurked in
and around his weight class. There was also the potential for great rematches
against Juan Laporte, Wilfredo Gomez and Azumah Nelson.
