Alexis Arguello Career Set

At 5'10, Nicaragua native Alexis Arguello was extremely tall for a featherweight. His height advantage provided him with the kind of leverage that resulted in punching power. Arguello.

Arguello's goal was to become the first four-division champion when he squared off against Welterweight king, Aaron Pryor.

In a true "Battle of The Champions", as the card was billed, Pryor and Arguello would engage in one of the single greatest and most controversial boxing matches ever. Both men obliged one another as they spent the majority of the bout throwing nonstop power punches. Towards the end of the twelfth round what seemed to be the turning point of the match occurred when Arguello caught Pryor with a hellacious straight right that looked like it could literally decapitate a human being. The steel chinned Pryor managed to miraculously stay up but when the bell rang a badly dazed Pryor barely managed to find his way back to his corner.

It appeared as if though Arguello was but minutes away from stopping Pryor and claiming his fourth world title. However, Pryor managed to survive the thirteenth and during the round break one of the most controversial moments in boxing history occurred. Panama Lewis, Pryor's trainer, asked his cutman for the "other one......the one I mixed" in reference to a bottle. Pryor swallowed the liquid in the bottle as opposed to spitting it out and in the fourteenth round a rejuvenated Pryor batterred Arguello eventually trapping him against the ropes and throwing 23 unanswered punches prompting referee Stanly Christodoulou to stop the bout.

A rematch occured one year later and this time Pryor stopped Arguello even earlier and put to rest the controversy from the first fight. Arguello fought 4 more times and retired from the sport.
