Ken Norton Career Set

Ken Norton was one of the most memorable fighters in the Heavyweight Golden Era.

Norton attended Northeast Missouri State on a football scholarship and began boxing when he as in the Marine Corp. He turned pro in 1967 and in 1973, fought Muhammad Ali for the NABF Championship of the World. Norton broke Ali's jaw and won a split decision victory. Six months later in the rematch, Ali avenged his defeat and beat Norton by a split decision.

A year later he fought George Foreman but was stopped in two rounds. Norton continued fighting and beat Boone Kirkman and Jerry Quarry and reestablished himself.

By 1976, Ali was champ again and Norton and him engaged in their third and final fight. Although Ali won by Uninamious Decision, many felt Norton had won the fight.

Later, after Leon Spinks upset Ali, Spinks elected to fight Ali again rather than face Norton. The WBC made history by naming Norton its champion without the benefit of a title match. However, in his first defense, Norton lost to Larry Holmes in a brutal 15 round fight.

Norton continued fighting but after losing to Gerry Cooney in one round, he retired for good in 1981.
