Rocky Marciano Career Set

Rocco Francis Marchegiano, better know as Rocky Marciano is considered one of the best heavyweights ever. He retired with a 49-0 record and Marciano remains the only undefeated/united heavyweight champion in pro boxing history.

Marciano, an Italian American, was born and raised in Brockton, MA. Intially, he wanted to be a baseball player rather than a boxer but the Chicago Cubs refused him saying he did not have a strong pitching arm. At age 20, he was called up by the US Army to serve in WWII and served 2 years.

He began boxing by representing the Army in an amateur boxing competition while waiting to be discharged. In March 17, 1947, Rocky made his pro debut by beating Lee Epperson by KO in 3 rounds. He won his first 16 bouts by knockout and began a string of impressive KO's.

It wasn't until July 12, 1951 that he was finally televised nationally when he knocked out Rex Layne. Soon after, he was on TV again; this time against Joe Louis who Marciano defeated. He had mixed feelings about the win since Louis had been his idol.

Marciano went on to finish his career at 49-0, undefeated and as a champion.
