Joe Louis 9 DVD Career Set

Joe Louis nicknamed the Brown Bomber, has been rated as No. 1 on Ring Magazine's 100 Greatest Punchers of All Time and named the Greatest Heavyweight of All Time by the International Research Organization.

Louis was born in Alabama where as a teen, he worked for an ice company lifting heavy blocks of ice. He credits that to helping build his arms and upper body. He used money given to him by his mother for violin lessons to pay for a locker at the local gym. His mother was not pleased but supported him none the less.

Louis went on to win the Michigan Golden Gloves and turned pro in 1934. Louis made a name for himself by knocking out guys who had never even been knocked off their feet before; Max Baer and Paolino Uzcudun  to name a few.. Louis went 28-0 until he finally lost to Max Schmeling in a 12 round knock out in New York in 1936.

Louis continued fighting and was then matched against world champion James Braddock (The Cinderella Man) in Chicago. Louis was dropped in round 1 but came back to knock out Braddock in round 8. After the fight however, he said he would not feel like a world champion until he beat one man: Max Schemling.

Louis defended his title 3 more times and the rematch with Schmeling finally took place on June 22, 1938. The fight ended quickly as Louis knocked out Schemiling in the first round.

Louis joined the Army in 1942 to 1945. After coming back to keep defending his title, Louis looked slower and it was obvious his best years were behind him. On March 1, 1949, he announced his retirement. Shortly after, he was harassed by the IRS and announced his comeback in order to make more money. In 1951, a passed his prime Louis lost to future World Champion Rocky Marciano. He retired for good after that.
