Wilfredo Gomez is one of the best fighters to ever emerge from Puerto Rico. With devastating power in both hands,42 of his 44 wins came by knockout. Although he started as a bantamweight, Gomez won his first world title at Junio Featherweight by knocking out WBC champ Dong-Kyun Yum in the 12th.

He began a relentless run in the junior featherweight division that included 15 title defenses all won by way of knockout.

In 1981 he fought Mexican Featherweight champion Salvador Sanchez in one of the biggest featherweight fights in boxing history. Sanchez went on to beat Gomez and stop him in the 8th round. Gomez continued to fight and won a few more titles but lost them to Azumah Nelson and Alfredo Layne and retired shortly after.
