Jack Dempsey Career Set

Jack Dempsey is one, if not the greatest, champions of all time. Known as the "The Manassa Mauler", Dempsey was a tremendous puncher famous for his exciting fights; many of which set financial and attendance records.

Dempsey began training to be a professional with the help of his older brother. In being poor and desperate for money, Dempsey would occasionally go into saloons and challenge for fights saying "I can't sing and I can't dance, but I can lick any SOB in the house".

Dempsey began a string of wins and was perhaps best know for his thrilling knockout victories. In 1919,Dempsey fought Jess Williard for the heavyweight title. It was called a modern day David and Goliath with many giving Dempsey no chance of winning. The first round of the fight was one of the most brutal in boxing history. Dempsey dealt Willard a broken cheekbone, broken jaw, several teeth knocked out, partial hearing loss in one ear and broken ribs. At the end of the 3rd round, the champ was forced to give up.

The next big fight for Dempsey was against Georges Carpentier who had been a war hero is WW1 and was extremely popular. The fight was shrewdly promoted and Dempsey was made a 50 to 1 underdog. The anticipation was incredible and the two squared off in front of a crowd of 91,000 and the fight produced the first million dollar gate in boxing history. Carpentier got off to a fast start and reportedly wobbled Dempsey with a hard right in the 2nd round but Dempsey came on strong and gave the Frenchman a beating and stopped him in the 4th.

The last successful defense for Dempsey was in Sept 1923 against Luis Angel Firpo from Argentina. The attendance was 85,000 with 20,000 trying to get inside the arena. Dempsey won via 2nd round KO but it was an incredibly exciting battle. Firpo was knocked down repeatedly but continued to get back up and even knocked down Dempsey twice.

After the Firpo brawl, Dempsey loss his title to former US Marine Gene Tunny. The attendance was a record breaking 120,557. Dempsey fought Jack Sharkey after in order to get another shot at Tunney. Sharkey was winning the fight until Dempsey hit him low, when Sharkey turned to complain to the ref, he foolishly left himself open and Dempsey landed a left that knocked him out cold.

The Tunny rematch took place 1 year later after their first fight. Millions listened around the country on radio. Dempsey was losing the fight when he put Tunney down with a big left hook. A new rule for boxing had been mandated that when a fighter knocks an opponent down, he must go to a neutral corner. Dempsey seemed to have forgotten and refused to immediately go to the neutral corner thus giving Tunny an extra 5 seconds to recover. The official timekeeper counted Tunney staying down for 14 seconds. After Tunny got up and collected himself, he dropped Dempsey, won the last 2 rounds and won a unanimous decision.
